Hey Gun Nutz:
As the title states, I've never owned or fired a lever action, but was thinking of getting one.
I'm kinda leaning towards the Big Bore .444 Marlin, but I don't know anything about these types of rifles.
Anybody know the best type of lever out there for quality/price/fun factor.
I watched a couple of you tube vids of guys blowing up stuff with the .444
Any thoughts would be great.
Thanks
I probably wont be using it for hunting, just pure shooting fun!

Hmm. Cheap, half descent quality and major fun factor? You might consider an SKS which are 7.62 x 39 and cheap. Buddy at hunt camp has one we usually end up blasting 500 rounds or so into some object until it's swiss cheese.:50cal:

Look for a .30-30 if you want a fun gun that's cheap to feed and capable for moose sized critters. Plus light recoil and a light rifle are bonuses. The EE is full of good rifles, just pick your flavour.

I think you should follow your instinct and look at the Marlins. I don't think I'd go with the .444 as a fun gun, though. As suggested, the 30-30 would be plenty of fun and cheap to feed and easy to shoot all day long. Happy Swiss cheeze making!

Forgot to say: get something with the big hoop, twirl it & shoot from the hip, now that is great fun, especially after you get good at it.

I chose the .44 magnum in a Marlin 1894. I reload so it is cheaper and easier to reload than the rifle calibers, and it is still powerful enough to take a deer out to 100 yds. If you want real cheap and you dont reload, or hunt with it then i'd even suggest .357 magnum as it can shoot .38 special.

now there you go........... here's the best suggestion so far............

Go with a pistol calibre levergun in .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, or .45 Colt. Reloading with cast bullets is inexpensive and you don't have to worry about case trimming or lubrication if you use carbide dies.

Nothing the matter with the 444 Marlin you mentioned but I'd be tempted to go for say a guide gun in 45-70. A little more popular caliber should you decide to get rid of it in future. Also, with light cast bullet loads, good for plinking and playing around yet has the capability to handle and perform well with some good stiff hunting loads.

I agree with most on here, for a "fun" lever go with a .357 or better yet a .44, possibly a 30/30, for more serious work, I'd take the 45/70 first followed by the .444. If you reload, those bigger cals. can be loaded right down as well.
