Lever action

I wouldn't say longer ranges is the main advantage its just that the 45/70 is a big step up in power if you load it to it's potential....I load and shoot both alot so here is my comparison: 44 Mag. 325 gr.WFN GC(LBT style)(Chambers) 1540fps from '94 Marlin.......45/70 480 gr. WFN GC(Chambers) 1860fps from '95 Marlin CB....and yes I would take longer shots with the 45/70 but it is in a diff. league as far as close range stopping power! If you are a believer in TKO values (and I am) this rates higher than the .375 Mag. and equal to .416 rem.

Some of my .45-70 data for the 1895G was taken from RealGuns.com Joe builds some kickass stuff and the stock recoil pad is discussed at length. Most folks that have tried my heavy 405gr hardcast loads would pull the trigger once, look at me in shock, then hand back the carbine and say "no thanks" :D

I've read Joe's articles on loading for the the 45-70 and they are almost scary. I love his description of the factory recoil pad:

This is a picture of a brick, not a great picture but, none the less, a picture. Someone might suggest this looks a lot like a Marlin 1895G factory recoil pad, but it can't be, because it doesn't flex, twist, compress, or even bounce very high when tossed to the ground.

Hiding within those dark recesses is a .600" vertical stiffening rib. It runs right down the middle of the pad, no doubt to insure those side compression voids never flatten in use and lose their original shape. The pad's not made of Sorbothane; it could be recycled off- the-road radial tire rubber, but I don't believe tires are made from compound this hard.

mr00jimbo, go to http://www.realguns.com/archives/newarc.htm and scroll down to "The Model 1896G" articles. But bear in mind that this chap is - very carefully - pushing the limits (and likes pain?). No matter what your physique and level of anaesthesia, those loads are going to whack you, but they are not intended for casual plinking. And a couple of shots in the field are very different than 25 rounds off the bench.

If you want to see RECOIL, go to
http://www.gunshop.com/vintage6.htm and watch the 4-bore being fired.

Thanks! I'm lookin' for somethin' to go out in the woods and "plink" or just a good brush gun, and have always been fascinated with lever actions, with something like a 16" or 18"...if I was not going to load hard loads through a 45-70 (say I was thinkin' just to keep it civil and go with factories) would it not be worth it, and be better to go for a .44 magnum?

The .44 mag will be just fine for that; that's what I use mine for. But you will want to get into reloading as it is WAY cheaper than factory ammunition. Check out www.thebulletbarn.com for cast bullets. Alliant 2400 is a good powder. You might also want to go with aperture sights as the factory Marlin sight is not all that great. The best is probably the XS Sight set- ghost ring aperture plus a while line front sight. (http://www.xssights.com/)

If you go the .44 mag. route and get into reloading you may want to check out M.T. Chambers' 325gr. WFN GC (LBT Style) and 19-21grs. of H-110 or the 290 gr. LFN(LBT Style), you will enjoy the .44!!!

Thanks guys! Just so we're clear, it'll take a deer down right? For hunting, but nothing much bigger, like say a black bear?

Deer, Bear, even moose at close range...last year I dropped a 6'5" black bear with one shot from a .44 Mag. carbine...325 gr. wfn broke both shoulders and found slug under skin on the other side...animal dropped instantly!! I can't sell this round short, its one of the best!!

Hey Ben, my long time hunting buddie Bob M. was telling me the interesting story details of that bear and how you came to drop it with your 44 mag - if I have my stories straight. (As an aside, Bob just shot a bear with an MT Chambers 465 hard cast using his 45/70 NEF. The bear didn't take a step after being hit. He really likes MT Chambers medicine! I think he commented that he's sending U a pic)

Also the 94 Marlin in 44 Mag will cycle the cheaper 44 specials for plinking with too....if you don't reload, even better if you do;)
Just another plus....:)

Damn you shouldn't have shown me that!!!!!

Right now I'm lookin' for
-A Rem 700 stainless SPS 30-06 or .308
-Lever action Marlin
and
-AR15 (prob gonna build myself)
but only enough $$$ for one...which should I do up first?

To quote Oscar Wilde, "I can resist anything but temptation." Welcome to the club. If it makes you feel any better, I am trying to resist a Ruger #1 in 45-70 for sale myself. Before that it was a Mannlicher-stocked Brno in 7x57 with double set triggers at the HACS show a week ago Sunday...(it keeps appearing at these events; I wonder why?) then there was the... oh, never mind!

sssssss

not sure about all you marlin fans, the new winchester trails end 20" in .44 rem mag makes one heck of a nice gun, and not as clunky as the marlin.

Surely you have the 2 mixed up...Win Model 94's are Rattle traps
A Win 94 meant for "Rifle" cases that's been Factory "Bubba'd" to cycle the shorter pistol rounds VS a 94 Marlin that was MADE from the get go to cycle the shorter rounds....No contest ;)
Sorry Win 94 Fans but if you're talking "Pistol" cartridges the Marlin is the only way to go:cool:

Before everyone jumps to the Win 94 defence:rolleyes: ....they are Great rifles/carbines when left in the original configuration (30-30, 38-55's etc.)
The "Modern" ones made to cycle short pistol cartridges are $hit:dancingbanana:
