How about Marlin Model 56, no longer made, but they come up for sale? They are said to be accurate and have full walnut. Any opinions?

marlin 39a
i love mine and it shoots better than anyother gun i have,
if only mine was drilled for a scope i would slap one on and test it out at longer ranges,
but the gun is better than i am with open sights.
never jammed once and its a 1951 from my grandpa that he bought new and shot a lot

Can't comment on the new brownings or henry's, but I have an old ithaca model 72. The action is very smooth, but... it only shoots 22 LR, the receiver is aluminum and scratches easily, while the winchesters use steel. The Itaca accuracy is very good (groups), but not always with a consistent point of impact, so it's a good rabbit gun or tin can plinker, but not up to 60 yard gopher/grouse head shots.
To me the Marlin or Winchester is preferred, if you have the extra $$.

With all of the issues with recent Marlin quality as far as fit and finish I have to wonder if new models are even in the same league for quality as the Browning and if it's price is truly justified. Everyone knows of the grand reputation the 39 enjoys but is it the same case as the new stamped parts, cheap finish Remington expresses riding on the coat-tails of well built 870s from the past?

Is there anyone who owns both 2005+ model 39s and BL-22s that can chime in with a comparison? The CBS and rebounding hammer (misfire issue, non-traditional) of the 39 throw me off a little but if they are equal in quality to BL-22s of recent years it would put a lot of potential questions to bed.

Basically do either of them look and function like $600 firearms?

9422 if you can find one ( they must be going up in price as they have been out of production for 4 years now) or the Marlin 39A

My first .22 was a 39a Golden with a 24 inch barrel. I traded it twenty years ago and a couple years ago bought this one from a CGN'er. 10 rounds of CCI Mini Mags at 50 metres under an inch makes this my lever choice.

I went with the BL-22, held a Henry at the store and the action was soooo smooth, but the fit, finish left lots to be desired, and the internals looked rough. Not saying they wouldn't work, but I was looking for a hand me down quality rifle.

You get a lot of gun for the money with the BL-22, perfect fit and finish on mine, nice clean checkering and engraving, and it is so light you could carry it forever.
