Neighbour wants to sell me his marlin 44 mag rifle. It is mid 70's version pretty nice shape doesn't look like it's been used much. Micro groove barrel. It's a fun gun to shoot and I want to give him a fair price but no idea what's it's worth so looking for some help. I see them listed at 900 but don't know if they are selling for that.

$650 for a 70's JM in excellent condition would be a steal.
To put things in perspective, the current "Remlin" guns with ugly cross bolt safety are selling for $900 at Wantsalls and $930 at Wholesale Sports. The older ones are generally better regarded (the mythical JM stamp undeniably adds market value, though I would argue it's unwarranted superstition) by many folks.
If the gun is really nice, on the EE here, I think $800 or so is realistically what it could sell for without having to bump it a bunch of times. I think the seller could even coax out $900 if they wait a couple of weeks for the right buyer. These guns are really sought out by the CAS crowd.
If he takes $650 though, WIN!

I bought 2 months ago. The LGS had 5 in stock and let me pick through them. These are brand new Remlins. I tend to be picky so all but one (which I bought) were rejected for one reason or another; all cosmetic. Selling price was $885 plus tax. If the JM is in excellent condition with less than 500 rounds, lots of folks would pay $800-900 for it. If you can get it for $800 or less, jump on it!
