Hey guys, just wondering what your thoughts are on a 30-30 for hunting. I have a 12ga (smooth bore, turkey and rifled barrels).
What can I REALISTICALLY hunt with a 30-30? Would it work for Moose, Elk, Black Bear etc?

Or give me your opinions on what you think I should get (lever guns only).

The old 30-30 has been "git'ner done" for a long, long time - and certainly is a good choice for those animals, given proper hunting skills.

That said, you can get a lever gun without a tubular magazine which allows you to use pointed (spitzer) style bullets. The Savage 99, Browning BLR and Winchester 88 all come to mind. I have a BLR in 308 and love it.

30-30 has worked for probably thousands of people, you just need to learn how it operates and stay within it's limits.
As mentioned, you can get something like the Browning BLR if you want to use spitzer profile bullets. I'm looking at one in .308, because I'm already set up with a supply of .308. Plus I like the takedown feature.

By a Miroku re-pro' Winchester M1895 in .270Win, .303Brit, .30-06, 30-40Krag, or maybe a Winchester M1886 in .45-70 or .45-90. Ellwood Epps or Prophet River might even have one in stock.

I'll look into what y'all suggested.
I should mention that I have a specific gun in mind, hence my question, it's a marlin 336 30-30 in excellent shape (PRE Remington) for under $500

If all I had to hunt moose was a .30/30 I would hunt with it.

However if I was to buy a rifle to hunt moose with it would never be a .30/30.

A .308 in one mentioned levers would be a better choice.

I often use a Savage 99 in .300 savage.

I am gonna be shunned here but it's okay.

I was out to buy a new lever for a all around multi use iron site rifle that you could knock around a bit.I was looking at 30/30 and 45/70's, the they clerk said I have something that may interest you.

He showed me a BLR in 7WSM.

Came with the box of shells the first owner bought and had 16 left in the box.Was a good deal so I grabbed it, was apprehensive about it but figured why not it is another rifle.

Turns out it is a good shooting, nice feeding rifle.A bit of a tap in the shoulder due to the weight but I would have no issue using it on anything I could hunt in this country.

Still gonna get a nice nickle 45/70 thought. :)

30-30 will easily work for bear, deer, and anything smaller. While elk and moose have been taken, you will be limited in range and target angle.

The 35 Remington is another common lever chambering which I consider superior by far to the 30-30, often offered in the same model of rifle.

45-70, 444 Marlin, 458 Marlin are more powerful options if either of the above are insufficient.

Not sure why you expect a shunning - I suggested a BLR in the first reply to this thread, and so far no one's complained. :)

That said, if I had a 7WSM I'd be laying in a lifetime supply of brass as soon as possible. It's only going to become harder to find, and more expensive. Caveat emptor.
