Lever gun questions

Have had a couple of the recent production marlins 1894 and 1895 and both have been excellent, however be sure about what you’re getting as there were some issues with the first Remington manufactured ones, the later ones they worked out their issues.

If you want a nice 45/70 take a look at the new Ruger made Marlin 1895 SBL, not in country yet but they will be soon and all reports so far is that they’re great.

As others have said the new production Winchester guns are fantastic and probably the best way to go if you want s gorgeous and smooth operating lever. The new production Chiapas have also been great and have the nice advantage of evening truer to the original designs without any added safety features such as a ranger safety or rebounding hammer.
 
A pile of great info. I am definitely leaning to a new Winchester. Was hoping for a 45 70 but looks like they do not make them in that round.

Hunting with the gun is not really the goal and I was wanting a shooter to play at the range with. From what I see my options to what is available after doing a little searching is

44 40, 44 mag, 45 colt or 38 55

What would you guys recommend for out to about 100 yards. ( I was leaning to the 38 55 but brass cost is a little silly if you can find it lol...)

I really want one of these new Winchester 92s but I am struggling with this new tang safety. So unnecessary on a lever and takes away from the traditional style. Thus is the same reason I stay away from the Marlins with safeties.
 
Id go with a good winchester model 94,a older Marlin 336 or any new one for that matter,for a plink er 45/70 isn't bad if reloading it's easy to reload and bullets are available everywhere pretty much.i have a chiappa .44 mag and it's smooth and shoots nice.zero problems with any of my Leverguns except one Marlin extractor broke ,5 minute fix.

For a casual range toy, any of these things will work. If you don't have a personal preference, I'd just choose the one that was cheapest and easiest to reload. From your list, that looks to be 45 Colt. Super versatile cartridge, as well. Reloading 357 Magnum would probably be cheapest (but not by much). If for whatever reason you want an "authentic" cartridge, probably 44-40 (but not nearly as "easy").
 
Well, I pulled the pin and ordered a 1873 Win in 45 colt. Looking forward to it's arrival and loading up a few rounds to get things going. Now if winter would just end around here so I can get to the range lol...
 
Just shopping for all the fixins to reload some rounds for range. If it ever warms up and melts all the snow around here. Grrrrrr....
