Impressive ballistics in the feild, I took a buck at 425 yards on saturday with my 336xlr in 30-30 in a hail mary shot.
Crappy bullet performance when it hits the target. Shot agood sized deer high in the ribs and the bullet did extremely little damage as it went right on through the animal. Leaving an exit wound the same size as the entrance wound.
I like the performance of their v-max bullets but the lever revolution can stay on the shelf.

Anyone else have similar experience.???
 
At 425 yards the bullet was travelling too slow to expand. Still that is one LOOONg shot for a .30WCF. I use the Hornady ammo in my old Winchetser 94 and I find it works well at usable .30WCF ranges.

Long shots aside, i believe the most effective bullet in the levergun calibers, Is going to be the heaviest bullet with the flattest pt.
 
I love the stuff....never had a bad performing shell....but then again, I use calibers in their INTENDED ranges. Even the hottest handload #'s for the 30-30 at 425 yards yeild #'s somewhere close to a .22 (+/- 450 lbs energy, 100" of drop)....not a wise use IMO, but hey, if you get one for every ten you wound it's OK right?

I like the concept of the Leverevolution and I can't imagine a reputable bullet maker like Hornady scamming sportsmen with hype. Can't speak as to how deadly it is in comparison to normal 30-30 loads as I haven't killed with it but I do trust the manufacturer.
 
I use the 45/70 leverevolution ammo. I had good group at 100yards would not attempt anything past 250 with open sights.like lone wolf said the hail mary part worries me also.
 
Hail mary may have been the wrong wording but I won't write what I was really thinking when he finally stopped running by me to turn and look back broadside at what he thought was a safe distance.

If reading and knowing the bullet drop of my rifle makes me an idiot then I must say its a lot of fun being dumb.

I have seen many cows dropped with a 22 when we butcher them. I know people who hunted deer with 22's in the depression because that was the only ammo available to feed their families. Are they idiots?
 
Ummm......it's kinda different.
Putting down cattle: 6-12 inches.....pretty much ensures proper precision placement.
During the depression? Idiots....but by neccesity....they didn't have a choice.
You did have a choice, so that means you chose to be one.

Knowing the drop of your bullet is one thing, but not being bright enough to understand that the likelyhood of making a clean shot is extremely slim, and the fact that 400 or so lbs of energy is not a humane figure to put down an animal is what makes you an idiot.

30-30 for 425 yard shots......sheesh.
 
Its just my opinion but at 425 yds that .30 cal bullet wasn't travelling fast enough to open up especially if it didn't hit heavy bone. I am afraid this ammo for the .30-30 has made the gun something it is not. It might be accurate enough but it needs some knock down power when it gets there.
 
I have shot a 30/30 quite extensively and including the Leverevolution

I will stop just short of a BS call, as I have no proof to call BS.

I will much less confrontationally assume that you range finder ow whatever you used was simply off.

The foot lbs at 425 yards is what makes the shot unethical in my view, not the range, as many can shoot successfully at that range.

Yup, just call me Constable Ethics on this one.
 
A 425 yard shot is seldom a responsible one - especially with a .30-30. I have chronied the .30-30 leverevolution ammo and it doesn't come anywhere near its advertised velocities and would never properly expand at that range. Hail marys often wound if they hit at all.
 
I have also used the 45/70 ammo. At 100 yards I get 2 1/2 inch groups from a bench with iron sites. Every Deer I have ever shot with this ammo (5 to date) have been within 50 to 100 yards. The bullet has gone in with 45 caliber size hole and out with large exit wound. The bullets have all expanded well and I have yet to retrieve one.

As for 435 yard shots with 30/30's, I wasn't there so I cannot comment.
 
If you guys noted, he mentioned a through and through shot at 50 yards... and the 425 yard "Hail Mary". Doesn't anyone besides myself interpret this as such: He shot the animal at 50 yards, and as it ran away he didn't want to let the wounded animal get away and suffer a slower death, so he hauled off the Hail Mary when it finally stopped long enough for him to get another bead on it. In this case such a shot would be the ethical thing to do.
