I just saw these on the Hornady website, first I hear of them, factory loaded ammo designed for a tubular magazine using bullets that look like a V-MAX but with a very soft tip. Anyone have first hand experience with these? Anyword if the bullets are going to be available to handloaders?:

I certainly hope these sell well, and are available to handloaders, I'll be trying them asap.

450 Mar, 325 gr
45-70,325 gr.
444 Mar. 265 gr.
35 REM. 200 gr.
30-30 Win. 160gr.

The 45 cal bullet would have my attention if it proves to be fairly stout.

They should really look into a recess in the base like the old 8mm Lebel had, then you could use spitzers in tubular magazines. The bullet tips sit in a ring around the primer not in contact with the primer. Neat idea but most of the lever guns are not the most accurate due to the mechanics of the action and lockup not just the bullet design. I wonder how much this would really change long range accuracy. I do have a Win 94 in 30-30 and love the lever guns but within normal Ontario woods the change to spitzer bullets would not do to much.

Ill try them as for lever guns not being verry accurate

10 shots from a 444 marlin and can cover them with a loonie and 10 shots from a 30-30 same loonie @ 100 yards .....good nuff for me :D

now the question is how do these fly, does the soft tip effect the flight :? :?:

has there EVER been a documented case of bullets exploding in a tubular magazine?

People have told me that the documented evidence exists, however, when asked to produce same, it never shows.

Is the possibility real? Yes
Do I think it's highly over blown HELL YES!

Smokeless doesn't burn well if ignited in a not so enclosed environment like a tube mag. If your catridges were loaded with Black powder, I'd think the danger would be considerably more note worthy.

Handloader or Rifle magazine did an article on this a while back, if memory serves. They got cartridges to go off, but nothing really bad happened. As the escaping gas had a much larger volume to fill, damage was minimal, even when they finally (after much manipulation) got multiple cartridges to fire at once. FWIW - dan

I read a theory that the original source of the stories was during the original days of lever guns. Primer sizes were very inconsistent and they were using blackpowder rather than smokeless which has much different pressures when ignited.

There was a documented case in a government test waaaay back (when men were men and...) where the problem happened and did severe damage to the gun, but an error had been made in the components used for the load. There was another case with a double charge going off.

I think this issue is severely overblown, and with today's components and firearms is really not a problem. That said, I'm very excited to see the new bullets from Hornady. Rumor is they will be shipping by the end of the year. 8)
