This thread is an ammo thread but I really think it belongs in the Hunting and Sporting Arms Forum. This new Ammo from Hornady will have more impact on lever guns and hunting firearms than any other development in many years!
Here is an excerpt from the Hornady site... Make sure you watch the video in the link ...very cool.

LEVERevolutionTM is the most exciting thing to ever happen to lever gun ammunition. Hornady, the leader in ballistic technology, brings you an innovation in ammunition performance featuring state of the industry elastomer Flex TipTM Technology that is SAFE in your tubular magazine. Its higher ballistic coefficient delivers dramatically flatter trajectories for fantastic downrange energy increases and amazing bullet expansion at all ranges. It truly is an evolution in lever gun ammunition!

Up to 250 feet per second faster muzzle velocity than conventional lever gun loads.
Exceptional accuracy and overwhelming downrange terminal performance.
Patent Pending EvolutionTM bullet featuring Flex TipTM Technology.
Up to 40% more energy than traditional flat point loads.

What do you think of that... I guess I will have to rethink my opinion of lever guns as just can openers now.
I am seriously considering a Marlin in .450 or .444... the ammo should be available here shortly... maybe a gag, cough, spit, 30-30;)

Whats that? Bigredd with a LEver that doesnt say BLR on it? Oh the horror:eek:
I got a guide gun you can use whenever the hell you want. Besides, you need the porting:D :D

I don't have a lever gun but I would use the 44 cal stuff in my muzzleloader. Even a higher end bulk bullet is cheaper than that blister packed MZ stuff.

Cool idea, but now even more guys are gonna ruin the look and handiness of their carbine with a scope (shudder) ;) I'll have to try that in my Model 94 .30-30...with open sights :D ...KF

The new hornady bullets uses a point made of a plastic flexible enough that it deforms (folds sideways?) under recoil-induced impact in magazine tube but retains its pointed spitzer shape in flight so you get a much improved Ballistic coefficient hence less drop at long ranges. I'm surprised at the claim "more muzzle velocity" since this results from the amount and speed of powder burn not the shape of the bullet- for the same pressure and bullet weight the MV should be about the same regardless of the shape of the bullet. More retained donrange velocity & less drop -yes.

I hope these were tested at low temperatures ie quite a bit below freezing to make sure the tip retains its flexibility.

but yes - a 300 yard effective 45-70 or 450 Marln - it is to drool!:D

Thats what I want to know. It can get frickin cold out there! It would suck to have the tips breaking off in the tube....

Last time I looked some of the 45-70 buffalo rifles are accurate to double or triple that distance.
Do you mean lever guns in these cals?

Hornady is also using some of the same powders that they are using for their light magnum line of ammo, so they can safely increase the velocity somewhat without exceeding SAAMI specs for the different cartridges. I'm really going to have to start looking for a reciever sight for my Remington M14 in .35 Rem now.:)

I agree Kombi - I'm talking about a lever gun with an 18" barrel and ghost ring sights - plus the limiting factor is whatever range that the cartridge still yields 1000 foot lbs of energy - nowhere near in the same accuracy league as the buffalo rifles and black powder rifles

Have to ask, has anyone heard from their friendly neighborhood sporting arms dealer when this new Hornady ammo will be showing up here in Canada?

Thanks!
An excellent point, John.
It's all very well to advertise the breakthrough and have 10 of the top gun writers rave about it but if it'll never see the inside of our guns what's the use.
You guys must do slightly better than we do here in Australia but the amount of stuff, shooting and otherwise, that never makes it outside the lower 48 is ridiculous.:(
I play a lot of guitar and much like the firearms market, there are incredible things available and they either cost an arm and a leg to import or never make it outside America.

Meanea

Lots of new info in the article Meanea...;)

They published some of the testing in the article... they did drop testing stuffed a tube full of 45-70's and dropping it 30 feet onto concrete... numerous times... no problem.
They also tested the tips at -40 degrees ... and +130 degrees again the tips stayed elastic with no problems.

Hey John, FYI, the accuracy of a marlin guide gun might just suprise you.
I shot a few groups that stayed touching when I had a 3-9 scopecheif on it.
And with factory Winchester Ammo.
They dont have the long range appeal of a 32 inch 1886 with an octagon barrel, and a tang sight, but offhand @ 200, the steel rings everytime if I do my part. BUt I wouldnt take it to a thousand yard match:D :D :D
