hello people. Looking for the info on subsonic load for tokarev ammo. All could find is some traces of info, all applied to silenced, long-barreled firearms. I need a pistol loads. Also, preferably load for relatively light cast bullets. Heavy bullets will sit way past the bottleneck, which is not good for cast projectiles.

Semiahmoo R&G club has restricted the use of TT-33, due to its projectiles being "supersonic" and "too loud". I have a few strong words on this ruling, but the bottom line is that I need to load for my tokarev now.
 
I know others will be along but I suggest Trail Boss powder.

I reload it under 165gr cast (thanks Jethunter) and 110gr Hornady RN for my 30-30 and chony'd velocities are 1024fps.

There is load data on the Hodgdon websight but in a nutshell:
Mark on the outside of the case where the bottom of the bullet will be at the correct COL. I use a fired case that has not be deprimed or resized.
Fill case to mark with Trail Boss.
Dump the powder onto your scale and weigh. That is your Maximum load.
Start as low as 70% of your Max load. That should be subsonic.

But will it cycle the action?

Not sure if I will find the Trail Boss in a hurry, me think adapting recipes from other cartridges with similar volume and bore-to-bullet weight ratio. Didn't expect information on the net being so thin on this subject.
 
Wholesale in Langley has like 8lb of trail boss.
Stuff is pretty useless besides gallery loads, was looking at it for another cartridge.

Could also experiment by pulling milsurp boolits, and taking a few grains out. Some guys do that for 7.5x55 for older swiss rifles ( like my Schmidt-Rubin 1889 ).

9mm and .40 S&W are both supersonic out of 4.5+ barrels aren't they? Sounds like fudd-tastic RO's.
 
I can verify CharlesT's advise. Same thing at one range I belong to, the surplus was chewing the backstops badly. Start at 70% and work up until it cycles!

Look at ".30 Mauser" loads for guidance.

For up to 90 gr cast bullets, try the following:

Bullseye - 3.0-4.0 grs
Red Dot - 3.5-5.0 grs
Unique - 3.5-5.0 grs

These should all be subsonic.

When working on the lower edge of thsoe loads, always be watchful that the bullet exits the bore.
 
4.8 gr of ww231 under an 86gr hornady sprn worked reliably in my TT-33 (but would not cycle the action in the broomhandle - go figure)

Supposedly 30 mauser loads are less than those for TT-33, so you may be able to buy 30 mauser rounds and use them? Though I'm not sure they'd be subsonic... This option would require some investigation and I'd only go this route if you are really dead set against reloading... ;)

Your cheapest option is going to be pulling bullets from your surplus, dumping the powder and developing your own load based on that powder...
