You have was was called by Winchester the "Heavy Duck " this was the only version of the model 12 chambered for 3" cartridges. Unfortunately it has been cut down. It is a very early heavy Duck model by the serial number. It will still make a great brush/deer gun. Most of the heavy ducks were fitted with 30" barrels and some had 32" barrels. Enjoy that old gun. I see 3" magnum uncut barrels on E Bay from time to time. They tend to trade at around 250 to 300 bucks. It will require a gunsmith to fit the new barrel.

cheers Darryl

My grandad bought a model 12 when he was younger, and used it for about 50 years to put huge numbers of ducks and geese on the table.

They are a fantastically fast and reliable shotgun. One of the few shotguns where you can hold down the trigger and just rack the action (gun fires on lockup without re-pulling the trigger).

IMHO - one of the best winchester designs (considering the time it was made).

value?

does someone have an idea of the value of these guns?
i got it cheap, just too bad the barrel have been shortened...
thanks for your infos, very interesting to know some history, never tought it was that old.

In that gauge and model, they're worth in the $500 CDN range, if original and in excellent condition. Refinished or modified (as in cut barrel), you can expect between $200 and $350, depending on overall condition and manufacturing date.

Trap

I have one Winchester Model 12 Trap grade made in 1943. It shoots like a dream: even I (not a very proficient pigeon shooter), powder a good percentage when I use it.
The wood is something to see:it has the most beautiful sunburst Monte-Carlo stock you can think of.
I think they are on one of my disc saves, somewhere.Too bad the pics of that one were lost on a photosite. :D
