LH Stainless 700 build- what calibre? (Now .308 length)

I am not sure a 1-12'' twist will accept 100gr bullets or heavier without accuracy loss. I had a 244 rem with a 1-12'' twist and it did not like heavier than 90gr. but a great coyote killer or use barnes TSX for deer.
 
What about a plain old 6mm Rem? I'd mainly be using it with 70gr varmint bullets and would be looking at a deer load with 80 gr TTSX bullets.

Anyone with experience using the 80 gr TTSX in a 12" twist in 6mm Rem? Any stability issues?

While the 6mm AI sounds intriguing, I just really would rather not deal with the hassle of case forming etc.
 
As a spectator trying to help spend your money it is hard to knock a 243/6MM. Bullet selection is outstanding. I would pick a barrel twist that handled the VLD heavy weight long bullets just in case hitting targets at 1000 yards became a hobby. Quick research suggests 1 in 8" for 105 long bullets or 1 in 7" for the 115 grain range but availability always intrudes. The short case necks of the appropriate short action rifles would concern me a bit but really a non issue. The 6MM Rem fits a short action I think and as a standard chamber would be a dandy choice. If more velocity was wanted one of the short Magnum chamberings or the 284 based Wildcats would suffice.

I just bought my first 223 scoped left bolt action ever and find shooting target groups a lot more fun than I ever thought it would be. It is a little CZ and wouldn't meet your specs but it is hard to knock the light recoil, cheap ammo options and reload costs. Long range shooting is now very appealing. So for a similar build my eye would prefer a traditional f class styling and long barrel with the weight a little lighter and a laminated stock less blocky looking unless real f class was an option. Something like the old classic target peep sighted rifles popular after the war. Pleasing lines and deadly accurate but fitted for scope use. As far as a scope many guys know much more about this but it seems a guy should put the best on a top drawer build like this.

Of course if shooting sheep across valleys was the goal it would be totally different, shorter lighter and .264 powerhouse.
 
I'm not looking for a long range comp rifle nor am I particularly interested in a heavy barrel rifle in this case. I have heavy barrel, long range rifles covered off already. I'm looking for a sporter/medium sporter weight rifle that will be primarily a coyote/wolf rifle with the occasional deer hunt thrown in the mix.

As stated, I am interested in loading 70 gr varmint bullets and perhaps 80 gr TTSX bullets for the occasional deer hunt.

Anyone care to share their results with a 12" twist barrel, 80 gr TTSX bullets in a 6mm Rem?

How about the 250 Savage? Always a cartridge I've desired but not commercially available in a left hand bolt action. Looks really good on paper. Should I expect any major feeding issues from the .308 magazine?
 
Should feed like a dream. I am not a ackley improved guy, but do have a look at the 250-3000 AI. It is about the only AI cartridge I like.
 
Alrighty, the lh .308 arrived at the door today :) Sure is pretty :)

So I've decided on the 'lowly' 250 Savage. I put up a want ad for a SS #2 contour barrel in .257. Thinking about a 9 or 10" twist, leaning towards the 9.

Does anyone have any serious reasons for me NOT to build a 250 Savage? Any suggestions on where to find an in stock barrel for this project?

I am in the midst of a 250Savage project but have stalled for other projects and health issues.

It's a 700SA and a PacNor 1:9" SS bbl in factory mountain rifle contour. I like using factory contours for Remingtons as it makes finding stocks and fitting them a lot easier. My stock is a TI take-off that the bbl will drop right into.
 
So the decision has been made and all of the parts have been gathered...it's going to be a .260 Rem :)

I wasn't able to quickly source a new barrel in .257" so I ordered one and it will be my next project. I went with a Shilen SS 9" twist in a #3 contour.

I think I'm going to send it up to David Henry as he advises that he can find some time to put it all together. After the great .35 Whelen he did for me last year, it's a bit of a no-brainer on my part.
 
Haha, so here we go again. So I have sourced a nice lightweight SS PacNor in .257 as well as 250 Savage dies and brass that will arrive this coming week (thank you SuperCub ;))

The .250 Savage is back on!! I have also located a new take off lh CDL stock so that's what it will start out in. I do see another Boyds lh pepper laminate stock in my future though...

I did ponder much on keeping or selling that kit to the point where I appeared playing games with serious buyers. I apologize for that and thank you for your patience.

If not for my 257R, it would have stayed with me. Pkg. went to post yesterday. Please advice on it's arrival.

Good choice, and excellent barrel choice. My only advice would to use a lighter than wood stock, it will point and handle much nicer with a lighter contour barrel. I personally would suggest a wildcat composite, in the model 7 pattern.

I'm going to talk to Mr. Henry about some ideas to lighten the CDL stock, he's apparently quite handy when it comes to stock work. I really don't want a composite on this one.
 
The .250 is complete and has found it's way home :). David Henry's work is fantastic...

Not 100% sold on the blued/stainless look, I think because of the high gloss finish on the action is in such contrast with the amazing bead blasted finish on the Pac Nor. Once I figure out how well it shoots, I'll decide if I'm going to go the cerakote route.

Picked up a new Swarovski Z3 3-9x36 duplex, mounted it up this afternoon. I sure love this scope...picked it up new at WSS Calgary on sale, got the last/only one!

No pics yet, just heading to work again :(

Nice scope for the project. I was thinking a FXII 4x for a certain 250Savage M700 that I was going to do. I ended up putting that Leupold on my 257Roberts.
 
Crude weigh-in today showed 7.6 lbs scoped. That's with walnut and a 24" barrel :)

Overall, very pleased with how this one turned out. Just need to find the time to load for it and shoot it.
