Have any guys here working on guns heard about the huge increase in rates for this year from their insurance company??????
I'm being told the rates are going to triple April......
What are you guys paying in other parts of Canada??

Well if you work on firearms for people other then yourself here in canada you require insurance (or at least its advisible to have liability insurance)
this insurance appears to be on the rise due to the fact it involves firearms Im told its because of a couple of very large judgements in 2010.

Well an increase even of double or triple would not surprise me, I dont agree with it but I cant do much to prevent it.
My buddy just came back from vacation to find his insurance as a structural engineer had doubled. He went away for his B day and came back to that
Happy f#!*!^& B day I guess

20 years ago I was paying $500 per year... then my agent said that company was no longer offering that coverage... the agent looked for another company and came up with a $25000 annual premium.

I have had no insurance for 41 of the 43 years I have been gunsmithing.

My 2 gunsmith friends have no liability, as they could never afford the premiums! The one told me they can just take the whole shop as it would be cheaper! The one gunsmith had his building insurance dropped as they did not want to insure anyone dealing in guns! Had a hell of a time to find a new broker to insure his shop! What a country we live in! Dale Z!

I had to go without insurance for a few years because of the $25000.00 premiums. I now have insurance through Hub International at an affordable and respectable rate. They now advertise in 'Canadian Access to Firearms' for gunsmiths and sporting goods stores.

Insurance for everything is going up. The insurance companies are jealous of the bank's billion dollar quarterly profits.

what would happen

I'm really quite surprised that with all the people on here that repair or replace parts on firearms for others, appear to not have liability insurance.
And with the judgments now getting bigger and bigger Im wondering if doing this type of work is worth the risk.
A simple example, is a fellow shortens the barrel a couple of turns and re-chambers that gun, and the owner goes out and has a brass fail after about 60 rounds. The boy shooting the gun is a grandson of the owner an he losses a eye.
Now what happens to the guy who did the gun work? It appears as though the family may move ahead with charges.
No matter what happens as end result the lawyers are going to milk this for a long time I'm sure. An if the ol guy with the lathe and been doing this for a side line for 50 yrs is found guilty. He will lose everything for sure, as he doesn't have any Insurance. If he had at least the Insurance company would fight for him. Different lawyers have told him that in past cases similar. The judgments are generally found that if a firearm is altered from its original manufacture the ones modifying or fits parts in the gun are now responsibility for liability. I guess that's why insurance is so high.
Just something to think about when someone walks into our shops and asks if You can do something!!!!!!
Maybe not anymore.

Lawsuits in canada are not of the same ridiculous amounts as the states. Generally you need to show some monetary loss to get the money back. Of bigger concern would be a negligence charge, or in my mind, the worst would be your conscience if you did something questionable that ended up with someone being hurt.

I would check with the NFA they would direct you in the wright direction ,this is who we get insurance for our range from and the only one that was afordable after checking out a few places.
