Guys,

I used to hold a "FAC" (Non-Restricted) expired 2003. I also Completed my CFSC in 1998 before the CRFSC course existed. I have never owned a firearm and still do not.

I have reacquired an interest in the sport again after a visit to the range with one of my co-workers.

My question is can I got from a expired FAC to a Restricted-PAL in one application or do I have to renew to a PAL then upgrade to Restriced-PAL?

Also is there a good list of class times for the CFSC and CRFSC courses. Although I did the CFSC in 1998 I would like to renew it as I have been away from the sport for a extended period of time.

I have 0 interest in hunting.

Thanks In Advance :)

Paul

Your location will be important for those who know about the CFSC and CRFSC courses, posting a list covering all of Canada would be a lot of work. You are also going to have to get your PAL and your R-PAL, having an expired FAC card is not going to be of any use, it is expired after all.
You can take the PAL and R-PAL course over the same weekend however, so it's actually a pretty easy process.

the course you took in 1998 (should have had non restricted and restricted testing in it) was good for both Non and Rest. firearms, to take it now you are looking a 2 separate courses , if you still have your paperwork why not apply for the restricted PAL and get someone to coach you to bring yourself back up to speed.Save your money for guns and ammo.

I had the same problem.

Paul,

Same thing happened to me. Unfortunately, I had taken the course prior to 1994, and was forced to retake both the non-restricted and restricted courses again. Seeing as you completed the test in '98, you are probably grandfathered. If for some reason you aren't grandfathered, I recommend just getting the manuals and challenging the exams - if you're comfortable. They're not difficult. You may want to brush up on the practical side of the house if you haven't handled a rifle/pistol in a while.

Your PAL and RPAL applications are made on the same application form. I think it was around $80 for both. I'm pretty sure there's still an amnesty in effect for the renewals for expired FACs,POLs/PALs.

Do you still have your FAC lic. number? A simple phone call to the CFC explaining your case and they'll direct you as required. I found the folks at the CFC pretty helpful in that regard.

They have all the application forms and info online at the www. cfc-cafc.gc.ca/default_e.asp website. The PAL/RPAL form is more like a passport application these days. Not just showing up at your local RCMP shop, paying $10 and getting your FAC anymore! Progress ...

For me, it was somewhat of a treasure hunt getting all the paperwork squared away and retaking the courses - I spent more time tracking down the appropriate contacts for the courses than anything. Had to do it all in french to boot - character building! After that ... hurry up and wait for the processing. I hope you're not planning on picking up a gun anytime soon. Suffice to say, its good for 5 years (just like your passport) and well worth it!

Good luck!

I'm in almost exactly the same situation. I did my course in 1997 sent in my rpal application last month. No problem with the course. Now if my friends at the CFO would get off their A$$es I'd have my rpal.

My bad sorry. I called a local range and they put me in touch with a local instructor.

1998 good to go

Checking old records back to sept 1994 if you took the course in 1998 ( test in 98 good for both) your good to go and apply for Rpal, tests are for life! . On the other hand get some hands on traing from the club you intend to join never hurts to have refresher in safety.

The course is a joke if you are familiar with firearms at all. Get your buddy to familarize you with the particulars again, get your hands on a semi auto, bolt, and pump shotgun once you are comfortable working the actions skim over the PAL book and you'll save alot of money

CFSC (1998) = CFSC and CRFSC

Just called the CFC and confirmed CFSC (1998) = CFSC and CRFSC. A completed Form 921 and the application fee is all I will need. Thanks for the freeback guys it allowed me to ask educated questions.
