Life Expectancy of a SKS?

Why are you guys talking ammo count like yall got sks with virgin barrel? Wouldn't the ammo count of an sks be unknown since these are military surplus and there's no way to tell how many shot Ivan fired?

Thats the point unknown shots by Ivan then rebuild at factory then sold to us the x amounts of ammo and it still shoots ! They are indestructable. I have a freind that shoots a Norc sks and never cleans it still shoots when it jams he sprays brake cleaner then lube and it shoots again !

I have several and its difficult to spend all my sks time with one single rifle at this point in time. Having that said, I have a consumer made Chinese SKS from the eighties that probably has 10 or 12 cases shot thru it. I've replaced no parts and it shoots about the same as it did when it was new. I think it takes a lot to wear them out, and just normal cleaning and rust prevention is all that it takes to keep it working. Back in the eighties, corrosive ammo was not a scary thing that causes gun cancer as it does today. All our military ammo was corrosive. We simply cleaned them properly and put them in the safe.

The SKS rifle is all but indestructible:D:D:D:, especiallly since Canadians can't shoot 10 rounds (thanks to the Liberals) without reloading.

As has been mentioned in this thread, heat from firing is what really wears out the barrel, and I highly doubt that we can reload fast enough (with our 5 round rule) to really wear out a SKS barrel. If you're lucky enough to have a chromed barrel, it's likely the rifle will outlast YOU, unless of course you shoot a couple of crates of ammo through it a year.

Even if someone DOES manage to wear out a SKS barrel, what's stopping the shooter from spending a couple hundred bucks (now, that is) and buying another SKS?? SKS's are, right now, pretty damned cheap, especially if you go for the Chinese SKS deal with Marstar (buy a crate of ammo - 1200 surplus rounds get a Chinese SKS for $75).

It's such a KISS rifle that if it had a pistol grip and detachable magazines (not the SKS-D), I don't think the AK-47 would have made it into production (sorry Mikhail Kalashnikov).

Just clean the gas tube which is NOT chrome plated when you clean the barrel. If you have the money to buy enough ammo to wear out a barrel, you can easily afford another SKS;)

AK is even simplier, filed stripping takes 15 sec and assembling is back 25 sec (as per Soviet Army normatives if I remember it correctly).

A non chrome lined barrel will last about 5000 rounds. Heat is the biggest killer of non chrome lined barrels and dumping 2 or 3 30 round magazines really fast will greatly reduce the barrels life span. Chrome lined barrels can last 2x - 3x longer then a non-chrome lined barrel with a small sacrifice of being slighly less accurate....snip....

What kind of stupid nonsense are people dribbling out!! Where in CANADA can you "dump 2 or 3 - 30 round magazines really fast" through anything other than a .22 cal rifle?? We are limited to 5 rounds in a magazine here as is the poster in Edmonton and the idiotic response that was given from Vancouver!
Sheesh, and then you wonder why the anti's get their panties in a wad... what are you professing here, that you break the law!

crazy talk...

not sure about that , the 7.62 x39 mm is a low velocity cartridge , not a barrel burner it probably take more than 5000 shoot , probably like 10-15k , my cz858 is near the 3k mark and accuracy is the same before and after that , i'm sure this summer i will past the 5-6k mark and the barrel will be like a new

hows the cz holding up?

Iv probably eaten up 4000 rounds with my Norinco SKS, i have replaced an extractor spring and a firing pin. But She just keeps eating all my 7.62X39mm. i ALWAYS give her the love she deserves after a day at the range.

But how long can i expect it to live?

After how many rounds will i see my groups permanently open up?

How many rounds do you have through your SKS? And what did it take to keep her alive?

Will the gun become dangerous to fire after X amount of rounds?

The SKS was Built to last longer than the Troops they were issued to.

what a rifle for the price, it must be the best deal going

Very true , I just bought three more on Monday , 150 each on sale.....and they are Russian with laminate stocks , they look like new...I wonder how much the dealers pay for these SKSs to be able to sell them so cheap , and how much does the distributor ( the middle man ) pay Russia for each rifle ......anyone have any idea of how much or how the system works ?
