life of tumbler media?

just got my tumbler finally, and was wondering how long the media is good for? Currently using corn media as that is what it came with, but i understand walnut is better? why

use until the brass doesn't come out as clean as you like. I can usually get 5000 rounds of 9mm through mine before I swap it out. But I double tumble, two tumblers, one pre cleans, the other polishes.

I change mine when it takes almost 4hrs to clean.

I using a 50/50 mix of corn blast and Lyman treated corncob.

Petsmart walnut hulls and NuShine car polish with 2 used Bounce dryer pieces cut in quarters here. 5000 rounds and still counting.

Ooops, missed a part of your question as to why walnut is better.
Because the walnut particles are sharper and last somewhat longer than corn does.
