I just bought my M&P (1st gun) :), got my ATT on MOnday and have since put 500 rounds through it in the last 2 days. Anyone have an idea how long the barrel on one (round count) of these would last before needing replacement? I realize the M&P is pretty new, but I'm thinking of you guys with glock experience stc. Thanks!

500!!! You have to replace it immediately!

I've got about 10 000 through my Springfield XD .40 and it's still kicking ass.

I'll start worrying about it at around 20 000.

Even a Glock will last 500 rounds :dancingbanana:
It's pretty hard to wear out a barrel on a pistol
IPSC shooters will shoot 3000 to 5000 per year(after year after year)
springs will break but the barrel goes on

yeah yeah 500 in 2 days is alot. But Ive waited 6 months for the licence, 2 months for the pistol and then a week and a half for the ATT. I needed to spend some time at the range :). 500 in 2 days wont be normal. I was just curious about the lifespan of a barrell. Thanks for all the input!

I would check it around 25,000 rounds. I put approximately 4,000 rounds through my SigPro 9mm last January and the inside of the barrel had zero visable wear.

Low velocity projectiles will cause very little wear. I'm with Magicchip. Between 23-25 thousand through my Glock and no visible signs of wear. Ask Redleg or TSE Jr how often they change the barrels in their range guns. I wouldn't worry about wearing out a barrel in your pistol.

One of the long time members of our club told me his CZ75 had 60,000 rounds through it.

Some of the rifling was just about worn away....but the thing still shot 5-6" groups at 23 yds. (with the odd flyer over that). Other things had been replaced....and the barrel was due.

Barrels are erroded more from hot propellant gasses than by the passage of bullets. The powder charge of pistol cartridges is so small that this effect is minimal. The barrel will probably outlast you.

I recall reading somewhere that a pistol barrel's life expectancy is around 100,000 rounds. This would depend, I suspect,
on type of bullets used, how hot the loads are, etc.. I don't believe this article took into account such things as polygon rifling, etc. It was an old (early 70's) article.

For most pistols, of course, you can change the barrels in minutes, revolvers are a whole different matter.

Don't worry about the barrel and enjoy your new gun. Like the other guys said, the barrel will probably outlast you.

I don't think it will be an issue, I put 40,000 rounds through a revolver in 1 1/2 years, it was still perfect when I sold it (like an idiot). Springs in semi's do need replacement but there are some very well used barrels out there (100,000+) that still put the same groups on paper as they did their first year.

in "The Book of the 1911" Sweeny talks of having more then 200 000 rounds through a 45 barrel and it still shoots accuratley enough to win ipsc matches....

When people talk about burning rifle barrels out, they're taking about accuracy loss of an inch at the absolute most at one hundred yards. For a pistol, where groups are measured in inches at 25 yards, burning a tiny fraction of the powder of a rifle and producing a fraction of the pressure... I'd be EXTREMELY SURPRISED to see any measurable difference in accuracy before at least 50,000 rounds. More likely, never.

The gun will fall apart before you have to worry about the barrel

Prosper is right, remember most handguns burn less then 10 grains of propellent, a 45 less then 5 often. Most rifles, esp long range units are burning upwards of 40-50 grains of slow burning powder that's much hotter and hense erosive on the throat and leade of the barrel.....your grandson will still be shooting your pistols accuratley, go forth and shoot lots!

(I'm still shooting my grandfathers high standard, and it'll still burn up the x ring if I do my part)
