light .270 caliber bullets

Personally, I would not send anything lighter than 100 grain bullets down my 270 barrel. The 100s I shoot come out at over 3300 fps and vaporize the varmints. In my book, 90s are listed but seem much too fast for the twist....but to each their own I guess. I looked for lighter in the beginning but none seemed to be stocked in the 2 sports store here. When I saw the results for the 100s, I was stuck on this weight.

I`m not a hunter, just like to target shoot, and experiment over the chrony. I just got a couple of new tubes for my switch barrel savage, a 22-250 and a .270 win. Looking at those numbers, I was impressed with how close the .270 could get to the velocity of the small bores.

After doing some more research, Ive noticed that there are some very light bullets designed for the 6.8 spc, but I`d hate to have jacket failure and turn this new tube into a glorified shotgun.

These stories about bullet jackets staying in barrels, should start out like this. Once upon a time, in a far away land, lived a-----
Bullets have certainly been driven so fast they burn up, or otherwise disintigrate, but that happens between the muzzle and the target.
You might be able to get the speed of the light 270 bullets up to near the level of the 22-250, but the very poor sectional density will mean the speed will fall off so fast, as to make them a poor choice, even for targets. Any wind will blow them into the next county.

I've used the 90gr Sierra and gophers simply vanish into red mist and jackrabits hit the ground cleaned.Just pick up the hind legs and backstraps..............a buddy decapped a running coyote neckshot.........................Not for Big Game mind you..................Harold
