I would like to purchase a tactical light/laser for a Glock 17 gen 4.
What are my best options?

Thanks,

As you probably know the 17 Gen 4 has a rail unique to Glock. It is neither Weaver nor Picatinny... This way they can sell you their own tactical lights etc.

I love lasers and have them for my Kimber 1911, Beretta 92 compact and even have one on my Ruger MKII.

The Ruger employs a top mounted Weaver rail that comes with the gun and for it I use a very inexpensive NCStar Ultra compact unit. They can be found on eBay for less than $50US.

Here it is on the Ruger:

For people with the MKII or III Ruger, this is what the rail looks like mounted (I cut it down a bit as it was overly long and polished it up)

This NcStar unit will not mount on a Picatinny. I found this out when I bought it with the intention of using it on my Kimber (TLEII w/ rail)

For my Kimber and Beretta I bought the much more expensive Lasermax LMS UNI-G. I love it except for one thing. Its a pulsating beam and not constant.

Here's what it looks like mounted:

I love the way it looks but the pulsating is annoying. Bugs me because there are much cheaper lasers out there that allow you to select constant or pulsing. The Lasrermax cost me $189US + shipping (cheapest I could find on eBay)

If I had the Glock I might consider the Lasermax guide rod unit.

You can find it cheaper out there but sadly it is also a pulse laser.

I plan on calling Lasermax and asking why they do not offer the choice.

If you are OK with the pulse laser the guide rod is a very clean install and is available from Lasermax in red or green. The slide stop lever becomes the on-off switch. I may get one for a 1911 I own that does not have a rail. Then if you add a tactical light you don't have a whole bunch of crap hanging off your gun.

Guide rod lasers are very easy to install. Here's a video:

You might want to try an entry level laser like the NcStar... It has a spring mounted system that might well work with the Glock and it's very good quality for the money. Full windage and elevation adjustments on it just like the much pricier Lasermax (and of course no adjustment on guide rods) The Lasermax while very good quality initially feels cheap and plasticky. But its made of nylon and extremely well-built. It weighs less than an ounce!

Good luck and keep us posted... there are very few posts about lasers here. I think purists are not fans of them. I am recreational shooter and I like them. They have an off switch so you can still use your sights. LOL!

Cheers!

I have a Viridian C5 that fits perfectly on my 17 Gen 4. I like it but it has no flashlight, C5L I believe is the one with the light.

Viridian all the way C5L or X5L. With a matching Viridian holster the light, laser or both are automatically turned on when drawn from the holster. I have both The C5L and X5L with green laser on my G17's/19's. I use Surefire for rifles, but find them to big for a pistol.
