I'm loading 45-70 for an 83 year old gentleman and my trapdoor loaded rounds are a bit too much for him to shoot in his Henry. If you have a recipe for "mouse fart" loads for this beast I would greatly appreciate the info.Campro 300 gr. are my bullets that I have right now.

I have used Trail Boss for different weighted lead bullets, and 10 grains of Unique with .457 round balls crimped at the case mouth with good results. I woild try the 10 to 13 grains of Unique with you 300 fr Campro

While I haven't used 300 grain bullets, one of my favorite loads was 14 grains Unique with a 400 grain cast bullet. It clocked around 1175-1200 fps, and would be perfectly fine for shooting deer out to 100-125 meters. Not sure on the recoil, but surely less than a 243 if I had to guess (10-12 lbs recoil). Send me your e-mail in a message and I'll get some data to get the old timer set up.

I use a load that would be very good for your friend, almost negligible recoil (virtually none) and very accurate in my Cowboy....but it takes a bit of messing around to have the bullet component available.

I powder coat 200-250 gr. .452 pistol bullets up to .460 (two or three coats of powder depending on what powder I use) and then size to .459. I load these slugs up in front of 26 gr of 5744.

two ways to acquire usable bullets...buy wax lubed commercial hard cast from local gun store and boil the wax off , after boiling , swish in a small amount of methyl hydrate (I use common gas line antifreeze). They must be absolutely clean of any residue for the powder coating to stick.
The other way is if you know a commercial bullet manuf that will cast a bunch of .452 slugs for you and sell them to you unisized & not waxed...this is the best& easiest.

that's a lot of extra work, I just bought a 186 grain collar button mold, powder coated and sized to either .459 or .460 and loaded over 12-14 grains of trail boss, the smack of the bullet punching through cardboard is louder then the rifle

Jet bullets might have 455 Webley bullets closer to the right diameter. If a person casts the Lee mold meant for the Ruger Old Army is 220gr and listed as .456".

You could reseach the following from Hodgson powders. H4895 (doesn't appear to be recommended for IMR 4895) works for reduced loads. Caclulate 60% of maximum powder load and use as a starting load. I did that for sample loads and found it to be more than comfortable. Haven't got to it yet but would likely experiment with a bit higher loads. I noted that the cases get really dirty because they don't expand enough to fully seal the chamber.

there are so many more published loads that are below the pressure of those loads for the 45-70 that I wouldn't even start there

I've tried that sort of combination and there's a pile of unburned powder as well as the sooty cases.
Probably better off using less of a faster powder instead.

I haven't tried it yet but I know a couple of guys who load using the Titegroup data on this link. They enjoy it.

What powders do you have available? There's no point in sharing loads for powders you don't have and can't obtain.

The least recoil will be fast pistol powders at about 1000 fps.

Loading TiteGroup and W231 tomorrow with 300 gr. CamPro's will let everyone know results Monday evening.:ar15:
