Light Modified & Modified for 16 yard Trap?

Pattern it!

Seriously though- I shot trap for 2 months with NO choke... I was using an old Ithaca with a poly-choke and I had it completely set up wrong. It was effectively a cylinder choke. My best was 14 and it was VERY annoying because I'd miss targets and just wonder what the heck happened. Once I patterned it the world became clear- and the mod was the best! If your pattern covers the clays at the ranges you hit them then that's the one to use. Mod chokes are not created equal- manufacturer and shell will have an effect on the pattern you end up with.

I shoot very little trap, usually less than a dozen rounds per year, but when I do shoot trap, I use a Briley mod choke, and I have shot clean rounds with it.

I use Modified for 16yd trap, I have spent a bit of time patterning different brands of target ammo, and found quite a difference between some brands. One brand produced consistent results that where like having a tighter choke in my gun.
That same brand has worked very well for me shooting handicap (short yardage).

I've shot 25/25 several times with my IM tube. I suppose that I'd hit at least as many with my Mod tube, but it just looks/feels better to see the clay vaporize. For a competition I would go with the Mod, but for practice I like the Imp Mod. I don't own a full!

I have a problem myself with using the more open chokes on 16 yard singles in that chipping and cracking my way through the targets erodes my confidence to pieces, no pun intended! I am a full/xf choke kind of guy. If I am not inkspotting them my confidence wanes. I have always preferred a clean miss to a barely visible piece? I know that sounds strange but it's just how my mind works I guess? It is what has worked for me over the years. In 1999 my ATA average card received a punch to the 27 yard line at the 100th Grand. I use the same combination of choke and load for the handicap events and singles events both .
