Just picked up a Remington 700 SPS in 30-06. This rifle is very light, maybe a little too light. I bought this rifle for hunting, so the light part here is fine, but I would also like to take it to the range for some plinking, so I loaded up some 180 Gr. ammo and man it kicks like a mule! Maybe I should have tried 150's instead, but I want something for moose and I didn't want to go too light on bullet selection. I removed the Factory Remington "Limb Saver":rolleyes: recoil pad, and found the buttstock to be completely hollow. Is there something anyone can recommend to fit into the hollow buttstock to add a little weight to this mule? It's not that I'm a recoil pansy, I've shot 30-378 Weatherby magnums with not much more recoil than this little rifle has! How about a Boyds stock? Can I get one without too much fitting?
 
Why not just brake it?:) It'll still be light, yet a pussycat to shoot off the bench. If you're in the mood you can always take the brake off to go hunting, and it's a small investment.
 
A bag of lead shot between you and the rifle when you are shooting off the bench..... it does wonders for recoil.

Loose lead shot in the stock can pound the recoil pad off and will also turn to lead dust eventually.

I hadn't thought about the muzzle brake, Rodagra. Can you get them to attach with set screws(no gunsmithing) or do you have to have the barrel threaded?

It's a gunsmith job for sure, but not a terribly expensive one. Guntech can do it for you, but then again his suggestion for a "sissy bag" :) is a very good alternative too. Imho filling the stock with shot---by whatever method---completely destroys the whole concept of a light rifle.
If you're going to try a sissy bag, don't pack it too tight with shot. Leave enough room so you can mold it to the rifle butt and your shoulder for a comfortable fit. It really does work.
 
get a new stock

I find Bell & Carlson fiberglass stocks to be excellent for absorbing recoil, when teamed with a R3 limbsaver or a Decelerator pad
