I'm considering adding a light weight 7mm-08 or possibly .30-06, in particular the tikka t3x, Kimber Hunter and Sako A7. So has anyone here had the opportunity to wield all 3 and care to offer your opinions. Locally I have a line on a new old stock A7 stainless in 7mm-08 for less than a tikka t3x which is why it made the list. I'm open to used and other suggestions as well, if any one has any leads. My main wants are stainless and lighter than my Weatherby vanguard 7mm-08.

My walking rifle for about 10 years is a T3 30-06. Not one to buy if you want to customize. Very lite, add $50 for a limbsaver as with the factory hockey puck it kicks like a 300.

Old Sako and new are two different animals. One feeds, extracts, ejects. The other is getting bought on the others reputation.

What does it weigh?

I am also interested in getting a lighter rifle than the one I currently carry. The Howa Alpine Mountain rifles have caught my eye, as has the Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather SS (although I think that'll come in at pretty close to what my current rig weighs)...

Mine has the Limbsaver, Talleys, and a basic Vx1 3-9. I would think, all in about 7.5. Its a tack driving twigm

as i move into my late 50's my tolerence for recoil is pretty close to ZERO, so I thought I would give the Tikka t3 in 7mm-o8 and try, shooting factory 140gr I loved the accuracy and disliked the bite from this light weight rifle. now i have gone crazy and added and interesting newly designed muzzel brake. This weekend will be shooting the rifle with the new brake for the first time. Brake is the brain child of the president of our range at Wabamun. Report on performance soon to follow, I would state the price of this brake, but I just got my first infraction from a moderator so I must be more careful.........FS

Another choice for a lightweight is the Savage 11 Lightweight Hunter. Short action comes in at 5.5lbs. Top that with a Leupold 2-7 in a 708 would make a fine deer rifle for here in NB.

MAybe a Sako 85 Carbonlight rifle for lightweight factory rifle.

IMO, if considering Sako or Tikka and going light, get a lightweight aftermarket stock like a McMillan Edge or other. Find a donor rifle and go from there.

Another vote for the sav lightweight hunter. I have two, one a .308, the other a .270. both are bone stock right out of the box and are capable of under 1" groups at 220 yds with handloads if I do my part.
The 270 with a vx2 3-9X40 and sling comes in a 6# 14oz, add a full magazine and 6 bullets on a buttstock sleeve and you are still at only 7# 7oz IIRC.

best bang for the buck out there right now in my opinion.

What kind of rings/mounts are you using?

Anyone know what a new one of these are selling for in stores? A quick google search doesn't come up with anything but the US MSRP...

Edit - it looks like Savage has discontinued the old lightweight hunter, and now have a new one called the Lightweight storm. Comes with the new adjustable stock Savage is making, and its stainless, MSRP of $749 usd and weight of 5.65lbs.

Kimber Montana 84L would be my choice. 270 win, 280 ackley or 30-06. Kimber are known to have good triggers. 3 position safety and controlled round feed if thats important to ya. They also come with 24" barrel. The Montana is the best bang for your buck IMO.

The savage lightweight uses the ultra junky axis crap bottom plastic, I bought a 7mm-08 for my daughter and it's plenty accurate, but that mag system! I looked at inleting a standard savage bottom metal, wouldn't be that tough. She doesn't want me to mess it up lol!

My walking rifle is a kimber montana in .270 win, hard to improve on these guns.

I wonder if the new one continues to use the axis magazine or not... My guess is no, as it seems to have a button infront of the trigger guard for the mag release, which the axis does not.
