Light weight hunting rifle in 30-06

Thanks everyone,

I currently have a Weatherby Vanguard Sporter in a wood stock with integrated mag that combined with the conquest 3-9x40 tips the scales at around 10lbs. I'm looking for this as a moose/bison gun, hence staying with 30-06. Would a 7mm be sufficient for bison?

What rifle weight do people consider light weight, or featherweight for that matter?

The T3 is plenty light at a hair over 6lbs. The other good choice in that price range is a good used Husky Lightweight. The .30-06 and 7mm RM are pretty close performance wise. Game would not notice the difference, and yes, the 7mm RM with 175gr bullets is both legal and sufficient for bison.
 
Savage Lightweight Hunter. It's 6 pounds on the dot. I've seen them for around $700 at Lake Huron Rod & Gun. I think he's offering free shipping till March 31.

I have the Savage 11/111international trophy hunter and while it may not be the most exciting rifle to look at, it is more accurate than I am and pretty light with the synthetic stock as well as being inexpensive. The weaver scope that comes with is not so bad either. Good luck!
 
Seen a Sako A7ss 30-06 with a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40 scope on the EE on AO's website for $1500....next to new.

A Sako A7 rifle pkg with the Burris scopes go from $1150-$1250.

Tikka T3ss I seen going new for about $800.

Or buy a Savage Axis for about $400-500
 
I considered a Savage Lightweight Hunter in .260... they "look" great... went to the gun shop to check it out... NOT for me... the twiggy little barrels looks/feels flimsy... the stock feels "toy-like" (looks good though)... I do like the look of the bolt, but didn't like the feel of the "throw." I passed on it.
