Lightened shotgun loads for a kid?

When reloading is it possible to load a shell very light to work a kid up to a full load? If it is possible it just may open the door to me reloading and my son getting his first shotgun.

David reloading it is easy to fit the loads. A 7/8 load in a 12 ga is managable. You can also buy low recoil shells,also a good choice. Just DO NOT get him a light single shot!!best of luck AJ
 
I have my eye on the youth 870, 20 guage.
I guess I should be more specific, can a shell be loaded very light, perhaps even lighter than 7/8?
 
yes the 12 ga. is not as easy as ben says. the wad has to have a shorter cup.the 20 ga. for a kid or a smaller woman is just the ticket.
 
I had another thread running in a different forum, those guys recommended using a shell called a Fiocchi "lite", sounds like just what I am after.. Now to see if I can find them in Canada:)

My boys are 10 & 11 and these have worked pretty good for them. I wouldn't let them use it for zombie shooting but for getting used to the SG it's useful for instilling confidence without the heavier recoil of other loads so it has its place.

I've been reloading light loads for my 12 gauge for about a year now. I use 7/8oz #2 steel shot in a Ballistic products 2 3/4" Cushioned steel driver wad with a 1/8" felt filler. For powder I use a very light charge of Reddot as it burns so fast that the shot is very muffled. I've had good success on Grouse and rabbits from a load of 10gr. This also doesn't break the sound barrier so its very quiet.
Out to 30yds it will kill all the small game I've shot with it but I wouldnt use it on waterfowl. Ducks can be very tough and the waterproof feathers are very effective armor compared to a grouses down....
 
Another thought, I started my son with a Remington 1100 in 20 Gauge when he was about 7 (I bought an extra butt and cut it down). There is very little felt recoil with a semi-automatic 20 gauge and with a 26" barrel it worked very well. When he grew I put the standard length butt back on. He's 20 years old now and I've never gotten my gun back!!! I've offered him an O/U but he's only interested in the 1100.
 
I load 3/4 oz load in a twelve gauge. I use a Winchester Shotshell Wads 12 Gauge WAA12L Gray 7/8 oz with a 20 gauge over shot card in the base of the wad to take up the room. The powder charge for the 7/8 oz load is used with the 3/4 oz load. Kicks less, is quieter, and gives just as good a pattern.
You can safely drop one of your standard reloads by 1/8 oz of shot and just add a card filler to take up the space. It is not safe to increase the powder charge to compensate, nor is it safe to increase the weight of the shot charge.
A lee loadall is a great tool for experimenting with this.
