Lightening Tikka action

I found this online from Gunworks in New Zealand. They open the top of the factory tikka action (all actions on T3 models the same). I have emailed them and found out it removes 100 grams which is 3.5 ounces. They only charge $64 for the mod (NZ dollars?) on their website. I have some interest in doing this myself since I work in a machine shop, and wonder what everyones thoughts are on weakening the action etc. This company also does a mod so you can open your action with the safe on.

Interesting. I personally would not try it. I would think that the engineers at Tikka/Beretta would have done it to create the superlight etc if it made sense. Just my thoughts.

one of the front base screw holes is missing it looks chopped and is probably a bad idea. you still cant top load the single stack mag so whats the point?

One of the things that makes the Tikkas so accurate is their stiff action. If you open that up that way you're inviting flexing and movement when firing. I can only see that as being a detriment to accuracy. Is 3.5 ozs of weight reduction worth the risk?

Not worth the weight savings in my mind. The T3 actions are superb the way they are.

I am a die hard sako fan, but "light" they are not.




To the original poster, if you can do the work yourself, and want it done - do it. That said, if you still can't load it from the top -realize the only gain will be weight savings.

I have seen a lot of Gunworks rifles, seen a heap being used, handled a few. They do very very good work. Robbie at Gunworks is a top gunsmith, and does not compromise on quality or safety. If you check his website you will see that he has lightened 700's down to under 5lb. If lightweight is what you are after, by all means try it, and then spiral flute your bolt to loose some more.

Go for it, flute the bolt and replace as much of the bolt handle with carbon fiber as possible and see how light you get it.

New Zealand like Canada has fairly liberal firearm ownership rules, and because you can hunt over ten types of big game animals , all year, a strong hunting culture.
As for the tikka, go for it,

I do wonder if the Sako action and the Tikka come from the same basic action blank, and are just different machining processes, anyone know. ?

I see no advantage to opening the ejection port as you cannot charge the magazine from the top. You would only work against the excellent engineering design of the action.

Let us know how it works out, I would pay to lighten my Tikka up a bit, have a lightweight titanium and still usually grab the tikka
