Lighter bullet in a 308?

This load will be used in a Savage 12FV with a 1 in 10 26" barrel. This winter I want to build a lighter bullet weight such as 110gr for Yotes. Any thoughts out there? Or just stick with a 168gr bullet? Cheers

I’ve shot 110 hornady v max with imr3031 and had pretty decent results, just paper though nothing live. Also shot them out of my 30-06 with the same powder.

I find it really depends on the individual rifle.

I have a CZ550V, chambered for 308 Win, with a 1-12 twist rate and it won't shoot 100 or 110 grain bullets well. It will shoot the 125 grain and heavier bullets, up to 180 grain better than I can hold.

Then, there is the Remington 700 Varmint, it doesn't care which bullet weight it shoots, it just shoots everything well

I've killed lots of yotes with the 110 vmax in a 308. Always had great accuracy. Sometimes they rip the hide up pretty bad, sometimes they don't.

My N=1 but my ruger shoots 2-3 MOA with the 3 kinds of 147gr bullets I've tried, and 0.6MOA with the one kind of 180gr bullet. Any idea why? Twist rate? Barrel wear (apparently has a rd ct of 200 before me)?

Been Goggleing it this week. The 110 vmax seems popular got some loaded up for my 16.5” 308 compact with 4189. But it’s gu-na be awhile before I get out, I’m down with a bad wing. Are you planning on keeping the pelts? If so use the heavy bullets as they will produce less damage.

If you want a hole you can put your fist into then use the 110 grain bullets if they shoot well in your rifle.

I use speer 125gr TNT's with H4895 and they are absolute lasers in my .308. Mind you they are highly reactive on soft targets!

Most 147s are FMJ, which tends to make a poor bullet for accuracy.

I have superb accuracy to 600 yards using Sierra 125 PSP bullets.

long time back i loaded some 100 or 110 one or the other but i do recall the surprise with the groups.........i mean 1 inch +or- type.5 shot......have to look back to far but it was sure a surprise.....not thinking they were 300 yd speedsters but you could find a slower coyote or a 3 legged one.......dont be afraid to try them...no matter what the books say..every gun is different.....good luck....speed is fine....accuracy is final/////

I've used the 110 VMAX on yotes and it is BRUTAL. I've seen 4" exit hole with the insides of the yote pulverized into blood soup. Possibly the worst aspect of the 110gr bullet is how short it is. To get enough of the bullet into the case neck you will end up with a gigantic jump to the lands.

A better choice is the Nosler 125gr Ballistic Tip. It is a longer bullet and so easier to seat in the neck with a reasonable jump to the lands. The 125 BT still offers excellent killing power but not as brutal as the 110 VMAX. I've been shooting 125gr BTs in my 308 for years. They are capable of reaching 700 yds with reasonable ballistics.

I've never shot a yote with something as big as a 168gr, but unless it is some form of polymer tipped its not gonna open up on something as thin skinned as a yote.

Hornady 150gr FMJ...give those a try, they shoot almost on par with match BTHP's out of my 30cals.
I agree with milsurp FMJ not being up there in accuracy, I've tried pulling, cleaning, weight sorting Hirtenberger 147gr and loading them into my prepped 308 brass with Varget and yeah, not worth the effort. Shot better then the Hirtenberger ammo, but not by a whole lot.
