Lightest “Just in Case” shotty ?

Anyone know what the lightest defense shot gun is? I’m looking for a good, short backpacking gun.
I currently use an old maverick 88 (20”) with pistol grip … weights about 6 lbs.
I was wondering with all these short barrels coming out, if the weight has come down much.

You already have close to the lightest weight 12 ga pump around. The aluminum receiver Mav88 and the Mossberg 500 are light shotguns.

If you want a single then either one of the 13" singles or even an old single shot cut down legally to 18.5" would be a possibility.

Thanks for the reply guys

Whats the weight on the Fabarm martial and the Dlask 8.5"? ... both look real nice.

6lb's is general area for a Mav88.

For being light, get a Mav88 and put an ATI folder on it.

Voila super light just in case gun.

The 870 variants are THICKER in nearly every aspect, thus it outweighs the 88.

My 12.5" Griz weighs a noticeable difference more then my Mav88 which I just sold.

Got rid of the 88 cause it was too light for my likings.

For the lightest shotgun, you'd have to find something with an alloy receiver and shortest barrel to start with. Then, as much as I hate say it, polymer all the way.

Might be fun to assemble your own from parts found here on the EE.

My lightest shotgun is by far my 1200FP. This particular gun not only sports synthetic furniture over an alloy receiver, but operates with a very simple action mechanism that is lighter than many other brands as well. :D It's just a bit too long for your "Just in Case" intent.

You could "go Retro" and watch for an Ithaca 37 featherlight. I'd trust it over an 88. They are a dream to carry and have a "slam fire" trigger. I saw a 16 ga for under $200.00 in a used rack not that long ago.

Funny that many of these smaller shotguns aren’t manufactured with weight in mind. The Ithaca 37 featherlight seems to be lightest so far. Around 5 lbs for a 20 gauge with a shorter barrel.
Even the single shot Dominion Arms backpacker at Canadaammo weights around 5 lbs.
Ya, the fabarm seem to be the nicest tacticals I’ve seen. Anyone have a weigh-in on these? They don't seem to list it on their site.
Assembling your own is a great idea :) I’m just waiting for permission to browse the EE forums. Not sure how you would go about registering something you made out of parts?

lightest

I have a couple of the old Stevens bolt action (looks like a semi) with there plastic type stock. there are very light. Could cut down but 2nd shot is slow. I'm not sure of the mod. but they are cheep.:) good luck. AJ

The fabarm martial proforces is about 5.5lbs with an OAL of 32". It's pretty light considering it's pretty "decked out."

Ithica 37 featherweight is VERY light. However you'd have to get the barrel chopped and bored out so you could fire slugs. Unless you find a slug barrel, which is hard. Winchester 1300 defender is pretty light. But about the same as the maverick 88.

You could always email dlask and ask them how much it weighs.

I re-weighed my Dlask 8.5" with a kitchen scale, and it came out 6lbs 11.5 ounces (about 6.75 lbs). This includes a Knoxx SpecOps stock and a 4 round sidesaddle, but I took the trigger lock off this time.
