Lightest weight non-restricted semi auto precision rifle available?

When you say you want to hunt with it what do you mean? Just deer? Or maybe a bear? What range do you want to be able to knock down the animal at?
I have a couple rifles in 300BLK that I would shoot a deer with but it would have to be within 100 yards for me to feel comfortable and after reading up on the 6.5 Grendel it looks slow as well, it is a much more efficient bullet but to get the velocity up you have to stay with the lighter projectiles making it good for long range target shooting but not so great for big game hunting. You would have to be very selective with projectiles, a target bullet wouldn't be the best choice and heavy hunting bullet may not be traveling fast enough to expand properly.

If you go with a rifle designed around the 223 I think the 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC would be your best choices for hunting but I wouldn't be shooting at an animal more than 200 yards away even though the accuracy may be sufficient out to 300+.

I think you can reach your weight goal if you stick to the receiver sets based off the 223 cartridge and are very selective on the parts you pick but it will end up being over $3000 and the cartridge will be slow making shot placement extremely important which isn't always easy in the field. If you're mostly hunting in the bush where long shots are unlikely it should work but I would like a little more energy going downrange for hunting as I hate chasing a wounded animal.
I've packed M14's, my RFB, even my DT SRS in 338 Lapua through the bush. I find that the weight of the rifle is less important with a good wide sling to make things easier. I'd gladly pack an extra pound or two and have a cartridge that I know is going to do the job than save a little weight and be shooting a cartridge I'm not confident with on big game.

My issue exactly. I just want a nice light semi auto that I can carry out hiking and hunt with if the mood strikes me. When you refer to "EBR".....is that a modified Springfield M1A/M14/M305 design? If so been down that road....Really liked it. Regret selling it. Was best auto loading .308 I owned. Memory serves me right I got it down to just over 10 lbs and was accurate 1moa accurate with my hand loads.

As previous posts have pointed out it seems hard to beat the BCL102 as a starting point to build a light semi auto. Maccabee in 6.5 Grendel would be nice but it's hard to figure the cost accurately with little known about parts compatability. From all accounts more cash then a BCL102....marginally less weight and to me not as desirable in 6.5 Grendel compared to a .308 unless it's a full pound lighter....which is unlikely.

Here's a parts list for you:

BCL 102 - $1750
Fulton Armory 18.5" LW Criterion Barrel + NiB-X headspaced bolt + Armalite length gas tube- $600 on sale, $650 regular
SLR Rifleworks .75 Adjustable Gas Block - $150
ALG Defense Trigger - $100
SLR Rifleworks Helix 13.5" HG - $350 on sale, $400 regular

Gun will be in the high 7lb range and shoot sub-MOA for about $3000. Gas block is just past the end of the HG so you have easy access to adjust.

I still have a re-barreled/accurized M14 Blackfeather, sold my XCR-M and this gun will run circles around either. My friend runs an FNAR-L and I really like it, it might be my second choice for the money (he paid $1600), but my BCL is over a pound lighter, 10 round mags, and far better ergos for my use. Not sure if that's worth an extra $1500 to you but it was for me.

Yes that's a nice build spec. I agree .... the BCL102 is looking like the best option.

Mostly deer, coyotes & wolves usually 300 m shots around here. Up close defence from a Black or Brown bear if needed. I think a .308 is my best option. Perhaps a 6.5 Grendel with the correct bullet choice could meet the requirement.

Looks like majority of what responses you are going to recieve are now the obvious. BCL102 and build it with whatever you have set your standards too. An ATRS MH or MV will bring you to the same price range as a built BCL.

Is there anything stopping you from trying out anything besides a Semi? I can't personally speak on a .308 for bear defence, tho what would you think about lever action rifles? It seems like you are more after a brush gun than a target shooter. 45-70 in a lever and your going to be stopping damn near everything coming at you if you do your part!

Im having the same delimma. Curious how light can a modern hunter get? What about OVL I would assume it's just as long as a bcl.... And would building a 102 really cost that much? I thought MHs start at 3600 and much more if you customized.

I had one of the higher spec'ed MH's and I am now building an even higher spec'ed 102 that will weigh less, be every bit as accurate, have more features, have better aesthetics, and cost between 80-90% of retail that my MH did.

Yes, but the biggest cost of the MH MV, are the overpriced CFW barrels.

I can build a MS for about $2500,and that’s including a 20 inch CFW barrel, BCG and Geissele trigger.

My BCL102 will have a Proof barrel as well.

Haven't thoroughly priced out my MS builds, but I wont be using CFW unless I try a cheap one as I dont plan on using it in a DMR tole but more as a high volume plinker and training rifle.

I got CA CFW barrel and bolt for about $1000 all in.
I don’t think the proof barrel cost much more and doubt they’re any better.

Hopefully,I’ll soon find out.

Yeah, the proof is a bit more and comes with no bolt, that doesn't bother me as I am mating it with a Lantac EBCG.

I prefer Proofs look over the standard geometrically perfect woven look. Proofs almost looks like Multicam black which is hella ###y.

I’m down to 6.8lb with my Modern Hunter (no optic or magazine). I have a couple of things left to try, but I’ve pretty much swapped out all the parts that I can for lighter ones. If I wanted to give up my CTR stock, 12” Fortis switch handguard, muzzle brake and Ambi safety I imagine I could get it down to 6.2lb or so.

What's your build list on that MH?
