Lightweight compact rifle

The Scouts come with rings to mount scopes over the receiver. I'm thinking about going with a long eye relief scope myself in order to use quick release rings to easily switch to irons in the field. But I prefer a traditionally mounted scope as well.

ruger scout with the xs sight rail for a traditional scope mount or a ruger compact and put open sights on it would be the cheapest and quickest. The peep sight is the best

I like the ruger scout, I have used scout scopes before I prefer traditional scope, I would need to sort that out, considering I never see them less then $900 on the EE, was hoping for somthing more of a fixer upper to save some cash for my black guns ammo stockpile.

Compact, lightweight and cheap rarely go together..... I love my Ruger compact in .243, but you wont be getting one for $600.... and you would have to add iron sights......

Sounds like you're looking for a jungle carbine. Has everything you're looking for, except the caliber. It's light enough as the troops carried it around during
the war. you wouldn't have to do any gunsmithing, except maybe have the receiver drilled and tapped for scope mounts.

I like this, I assume you lightened the stock yourself. Right along the lines I was thinking.

I did do the bubba work myself, I cut about an inch and a half off the stock then put a flip flop recoil pad on so the LOP was shortened by somewhere around an inch. Then cut the big hole in the stock and took a few inches off the fore end, drilled a bunch of little holes under the barrel channel and painted it with some textured paint that I bought at Cambodian tire. All in all, I'm very happy with it for a pretty light weight rifle on a budget. I should drill a hole in the end of the bolt handle to shave a few more grams, but I just haven't bothered yet.

With your price point of $500 to $700 with the options you want, with optics... That's tight... Real tight! Kamlooky maybe on to something there. Or try a sporterized Enfield. barrel length maybe off, but you should be able to stay within your costs... IMO: A jungle carbine kicks like a mule for what it is... & don't cheap out on optics & mounts!

I figured a tight budget, that's why I figured I would ask around, and I feel like I am getting good advice.
I am patient and watch EE regularly so I can hop on decent deals when they come up.
