Lightweight heavy hybrid build

Given the short barrel for a .300 magnum, a heavy bullet like the Berger 230 gr Hybrid might achieve a greater percentage of its potential velocity than a lighter one. Apparently it stabilizes in 1:10, which was important for US military considerations, but I can't help but think that a little quicker twist rate would produce better terminal performance on game at long range. It has a G-7 of .380 compared to .268 for the 190 gr SMK and .310 for the 220 SMK, and shoots with a 250 gr load in the .338 Lapua.

Although balance isn't as critical in a rifle that is shot primarily off a bi-pod, or some other sort of artificial rest, I wonder how the short carbon fiber barrel will balance the chassis?

With respect to triggers, the gunsmith, who is currently working on a build for me, thinks highly of the newish Timney Calvin Elite, and is likely what my rifle will be fitted with. Personally I like the idea of the Huber 2 stage trigger for the 700. The truth is there are lots of good after market 700 Remington triggers out there.

I think this rifle is a great idea, particularly for the hunter who might need to access his area in a light aircraft.

Right now I am looking at possibly a 24 or 26" bbl

I'm still sticking with 300winmag, so you guys can stop the calibre recommendations. It gives me the right flexibility for hunting and target. I know there are better rounds for Ballistics especially in 7mm and 6.5mm, but I also simply want this build to be different enough than my 260AI so I can still get use out of both for different activities. I don't want to overlap with my 260. Not sure if you get what I mean by that. It's a personal preference thing.

It will have a brake, at the weights I am going with for the rifle, it is important for my comfort.

I will probably go with a rifle basix trigger. I have one on my 260 and love it. I can get a light trigger pull trigger (sub 1lb) and retain a safety, which is important for hunting. For me at least. With the light trigger pull I like to keep the safety on until right before I take the shot. Plus they give a great military discount when buying direct from rifle basix

The short neck on a 300 mag case does nothing to degrade potential accuracy.

I think having a brake is a good idea on a light ish 300 mag, makes spotting your shots easy.

300WM with 230gr Bergers is nipping at the heals of the Lapua and significantly harder hitting vs anything smaller.

You will enjoy it... just be prepared for a whole lot more recoil vs the 6.5.

But you already knew that :)

Yea a friend of mine hunts out to 900yds with 230gr Bergers in his 300wm and he loves it. I don't plan on hunting quite that far so will probably focus more on the 215 hybrids.

I once shot a friend's Tikka Lite in .300 WSM. It simply was not fun! It felt like I was getting hit in the shoulder with a rubber mallet. (I might not have noticed it nearly as much if I was shooting at a moose and not a pop can.)

I think ATRS does titanium brakes. They also have experience with Proof Research. If u want the barrel braked, it should be spec'd when ordered so they leave enough metal on the muzzle for threading.

The new krg x-ray chassis is only 3.5 lbs. no folder option though. Corlanes and Spartan Precision are both dealers.

Sounds like it will be a kickass build. Magnum boldface leaves lots of cool options. You could do the 7mm Practical. 300 Winmag necked down and improved. 180s at 3100. Even doable from a 24". Or the 7LRM.

Makes me want to start another build.

I'll look at the KRG. I have handled the whisky 3 and it is very nice.

I have already spoken with Rick and he does not make Ti brakes. He can though but I would have to buy him the tooling so $$$.

The difference in weight for something the size of a brake is not that big of a deal anyway. I will still get Rick to do the brake, barrel and fitting so I trust it will be done properly.

ceriksson, have you given any thought to Lothar-Walthers' ultra-lightweight barrels? Sleeved with alloy much like the rimfire barrels that are all the rage these days. Ridiculous weight savings are claimed. At least check them out if you haven't already.

Where would I find more info on the Walther L. W. Barrels looked at their web sight did not find them there.I know that most Guys want the detachable mags but I would prefer the hinged floor plate Its a better setup for a reloader and much more slender piece to carry in the field. Does anyone offer something like that I guess what I want is a hunting rifle with a chassis system ,lightweight ,some adjustability. Most chassis system I see would not make a good general purpose hunting rifle. The Eberlestock comes closest but the price is to steep for me.

Most chassis tend to start in the 850-1000$ range, MDT and a couple others are the only real exceptions. So if you want a chassis be prepared to spend more than your average riflestock.

I did some searching on the Walthar Lothar barrels. I have not yet found much for testimonials or pictures but I did not find anything negative about them though. I am still likely going to go with a proof research barrel though, but I won't formally rule it out until I do my due dilligence.

Have a look at the Manners tactical folder in carbon fiber, lighter yet than the XLR if you are willing to give up some of the adjustments. I have been looking at the TF2 for my next project.

Holy crap!! You spent almost as much on the mount as you did on your glass! Lovin the Spuhr, not so much the Vortex though. Feel like the rifle really deserved more. To each thier own I guess.

This is the one I had built, very similar to yours just a short action, you'll be quite happy I'm sure.
