Lightweight Horsepower

Damn that is a nice rifle Ack... they are all beautys... it seems you have an extra 7mm-08.:cool:
What is the barrel length and profile on the Whelen... I often wonder what is optimum length for the .35 cals.:confused:
What kind of paint and texture is it and who did the application?
 
I agree - nice stuff, the only concern I might raise concerning the Whelen is that from the pic the scope looks like it might be set a bit too far back. I assume you've shot it like that without getting scope-eyed.

The whelen has a 22" tube, I feel it is a good length. 2550fps with 250gr speer and 2725 fps w/225gr TSX. I had it built for back pack trips into the thick and nasty where I hunt elk around home, and as a play thing for bustin' big bruins (it does that well). Certainly an optimum length for this application (I've heard tell that a 35 loses very little when cut down... I think Why Not has a buddy with a super short tubed 35 of some sort?).

Paint is Endura, and there are many that will apply it for ya. I did the stockwork myself w/a wildcat blank and then sent it up to Corlane's for paint. I've actually had this rifle sitting in the rack for nearly a year, but it was desert tan, and I never warmed up to the colour. Off for a little "EL" green and heavy spiderweb and it's ready for a little more blood this spring (grin).

The 35 Whelen is a step in a different direction from my flat 7's, but it still gets the job done... just takes a little more holdover.

The rifle is very simply in design and concept.. but try finding one on the rack... certainly a gap in Rem's line IMHO. A stainless synthetic all up lightweight 350/35 Whelen would sell.

Nice stuff, Richard. My 700 CDL in 35 Whelen weighs about 15 oz more than yours with a 6x42 Leupy on it, and has two more inches of barrel length. Velocities are only slightly higher [c.25-30 fps] than the ones you are getting with the 225's and 250's. I have not taken any game with mine yet, but that is about to change. I do not find my Whelen punishing at the back end, although it definitely doles out more recoil than my 30-06. It feels similar to my 30-338 with a 180 @ 3150. What sort of velocities do you get with the 7-08 AI using 140's? I have a load in my 7x57 that is as close to 3000 as damn is to swearing, using Norma MRP. Regards, Eagleye.
 
Dave, I get 3030fps with a 140gr Acubond and the 140 NP from my 7-08AI, and right at the 3000fps mark with 140 BT and 140 TSX's.

Never tinkered much with it past that though, as the 140 AB's shoot into the 0.3-0.4" range consistantly, and I had purchased 10 Boxes for it when they first came out. That combo really knocks the game down, so I've stuck with it in the 7-08AI for sheep and deer... were I hunting moose and elk often I'd stick with my 140 TSX's (which I run at 3167fps from the 280AI).

I'm backing off of the 225 TSX's, as they are not really needed in my 35 Whelen IMHO, and I think the 35 Whelen is on the threshold for expansion much fast 250yds or so with the TSX. My goto load is the 250 Speer.... it works very well.

Good speed you're getting from your whelen... you must be knockin on 2750fps with 225's and 2600fps with 250's.......

Was out shooting the Whelen today, put 26 rounds through it off of the bench. I still liken the recoil to a 300 Win Mag sporter w/180's (about like your 30-338 I presume).

Looking forward to slaying a few bear with it this spring... imagine that is your plan also?

Gotta run... came back to reload a bunch more... now off the range for some more shootin'

Very nice rifles!

I'm looking forward to seeing if my Ruger 77 in .350 Rem Mag will do this kind of work...put em' down hard, that is. I'm just out in the garage right now, loading up some rounds for this rifle. I've got my laptop on wireless modem, looking up some load data - ain't technology cool?
