Lightweight Hunting Rifle Suggestions

Remington Mountain rifle, old or new in 270 to 7 mm08 or 260. What you save over the other brands you can use for optics and bedding if needed. My Mountain LSS shoots MOA for three shots and is all I need. There is currently a couple used LSS rifle in the EE. Good luck in your search.

Tikka will do fine for a reasonable person's budget.
I have a T3 Forest with a Z3 4-12x50 scope that weighs 7lbs 9 ounces.
Reasonable price and weight without spending a fortune.
Not to say I do not like the Kimbers and others but why tie up that much money?

my buget is up to $3000. I am hoping for around the 5 to 7 pound range. This rifle will be used primarily for sheep hunts but will also end up bringing it on mule deer hunts as well. thanks guys, will check out your suggestions.

The difference between 5 and 7 lbs is enormous. Is that scoped, Bare rifle? I’d suggest you actually figure out what you want and then proceed from there.

I always find these threads interesting since you so rarely find any mention of the scope and ring weights, also the given and often quoted weights of rifles are not accurate in many cases.

Personally, if I was going to purchase a lightweight rifle off the shelf, it would be the Legendary. Read some reviews and you will be impressed. BTW, Prophet River Firearms have several for sale. Enjoy your journey searching for your rifle.:)

That’s at least an 8lb rifle by the time it’s scoped.

The Tikka keeps getting mentions at the top of the weight scale. Drop a superlight in a wildcat or Mcmillan stock and drop 1/2-3/4 of a pound, and still have ~1k for optics in your 3k budget (assuming your budget was all in with glass). Add a $10 Yodave trigger spring, and mine breaks as clean as any of the Timneys I have owned.

While most do not, I prefer detachable magazine in a lightweight rifle. Otherwise the Barret or Kimbers would be at the top of my list...

With the wood stock and everything as per the factory. No attempts to reduce weight yet. Change out the stock and as mentioned you could drop the weight for not much money. This setup is $2000 as shown.

I have a T3 in a McMillan Edge and it fits the bill but if I were looking for something turnkey, I’d be all over the Barrett Fieldcraft. With the exception of a locking bolt it’s got all the features I’d want in that kind of rifle.

$1500 shown. Stepping over dollars to pick up dimes is insane.

Your right, I guess to heavy for the OP. I was probably thinking of the gun for me. ALL of my rifles with scope weigh between 9.5 to 9.8 lbs., except for one. The Legendary would feel light to me.

I like kimbers as much as the next guy. But if I had $3000 to spend on just a lightweight rifle. I’d look for a used Fierce CT edge. I handled one in 300 winmag last week at the range. The blance and weight was amazing even with its at least 24” barrel and large nightforce scope.

But if 3000 is your total budget scope and rings included. I’d buy a used Kimber Hunter or Montana in a non magnum caliber. Put a nice scope and Talley rings on it.
