lightweight rifle for a leftie

My left handed buddy has sold his hunting rifles and now has 3 stainless left hand synthetic stocked Tikkas in 243 - 270 Win - 338 Win...

He is extremely happy with them.

Though far from being the most accurate, having a creepy trigger, and being the red-headed stepchild of the hunting rifle world, a Remington 7600 in .308 might work for you. The police models are composite but are harder to find. The wood stock ones accept 870 butt stocks which there are dozens to choose from. The gun being a pump action is ambidextrous. It does have a removable mag, but it sits fairly flush with the receiver. No bolt handle poking you in the back when slung and the best part is these can be found used for a couple hundred bucks.
 
Actually Phil you could probably drop almost 2# off one of your Zastava's by going to a super light stock like a Wildcat and eliminating the steel floor plate/magazine. Either go with a blind magazine or picking up one of the many aluminum ones made for the commercial 98's. I hear you on the Tikka. I had one, also had the 55 and 595. The T3 is lighter but that is all that can be said good about it.

Neil that is a good thought .... i contacted a while ago and not a chance to get a stock for my lh zastava ... one way to do it with your way maybe with a mcmillan edge .... new eye opener ...
 
No he does not make a LH stock but his stocks are unfinished and take a bit of work if you have done one before. You can cut out a bolt notch on the lh side when you are finishing it. Stuart is pretty willing to help out. He would leave off the bolt cutout on the right side. They take a bit of finishing and you have to get someone to paint them but they are a very good product if you are handy.

just a quick update: if i can find someone that can work on the wildcat tat will be a zastava wildcat if not i will spend some and get an edge zastava ...

it is coming ...
 
I'm just finishing up my lefthand rem 700 SA in 7-08 set in a wildcat with a qwick-clip mag system and a Swarovski 3-9x36. It weighs in at 5#13.4ounces. The wildcat is a nice stock for sure, but it is a bit of work
 
If you don't mind second hand, a Handi-Rifle, N.E.F. or H&R, can be found with a synthetic stock, is light, is ambidextrous, has a very short action, and doesn't have a detachable magazine.
 
I vaguely remember this thread from when it started. You've been asleep at the switch Phil (and I am glad you were). Prophet River had a nice custom M700LH in 284 Win for sale in their consignment section not too long ago. Might have fit the bill for you, it has a slabbed action, modded, lightened bolt handle, Shilen #1 contour barrel, Brown Precision Pound'r stock. Tips the scales at 6lb 10oz topped with a Vari XIII 2.5-8X36.

T/C pro-Hunter Is pretty handy love my encore only complaint is I've gotten a addiction to collecting barrels Haahaa

The main point is that the Tikka is substantially overpriced and hard to get parts for.

The less obvious point is that detachable magazines get lost.

;) On the topic of detachable mags, I recently picked up two kits plus a spare mag for each from Clay at Prophet River. ;) Just for something a little different and going on the pair of S2 Wby Vanguard 'Flamethrowers' I got from you and Super Cub. :) They aren't on yet in this photo, guess I'll have to update.

well only a fool cannot change his mind: i will get a tikka t3x in stainless in 308 win with 3 mags .... easiest way for a lefty to get a lightweight rifle. sorry again ...
 
Buy it in 30-06, you may as well use the entire action length. Also drop it into a wildcat composites stock - lose some weight, and add some rigidity. Just my $0.02
