Hhhmm, that's interesting with the cut stock. Mines a '06 Ultralight model...but the damn stock weights 2lb3oz! I might have to try the chop job as well.....
Mine was, IIRC, 32oz (2 lbs on the nose) in the factory form. I used a medium-size toothed blade in my hacksaw to take off about an inch from the buttstock, and about 1.5 inches from the foreend (I cut just in front of the ruger symbol). I sanded the buttstock flush, and installed the recoil pad. I drilled holes for the sling swivel studs, and used the factory front sling stud receptacle, which I placed above the bottom surface of the forearm when threading the stud in, to re-inforce the forearm (I don't want it tearing out like on that Sako A7 recently).
Then I rounded the front with a dremel sanding disk to get the rough shape that I wanted on the foreend, followed by wet sanding by hand, using progressively finer grits of sand paper. Once I had it all ready, I re-coloured the plastic with black shoe polish. It turned out quite well considering it was a "hack job". The foreend is quite short, but I got used to it really quickly. Not surprisingly, the rifle is a bit more consistently accurate now, and the foreend has much less flex. The gun still shoots sub-MOA with several different loads, and it took its first deer yesterday with a rushed lung shot at 200 yards from the kneeling position. It is a tiny bit less muzzle-heavy now, and about 1 lb lighter. It balances perfectly on the front action screw, and points like a dream.
Overall, it may be ugly, but the rifle is a dream to shoot and carry in its shortened form.
I may still try an MPI or Brown, just because
