lightweight X bullets and moose

Shot a moose with a 168 TSX out of a 300 H&H. Fell over.

Shot 2 medium sized caribou with a 257 Weatherby one after the other. First one with a 100 Nosler BT, instant bang flop.

Second caribou about 15m behind the first one. 100 grain X bullet, took 2-3 steps and fell on his nose.

Looking in my reloading room I have 1 part box of 168 TSX's.

I know the mono metals work but I've just never been enamored with them.

Is moose off the table for the lightweight X bullets?

110GR .277
120GR .284
130GR .308

???

This moose would tell you different than all the paper hunters on here. 130gr ttsx, 300 savage, 2850 fps. Smashed through front shoulder bone/blade and exited rear ribs, taking out two ribs with it. Moose walked 30ft and died. TTSX are not regular bullets.

My newest .257 Weatherby squirting 100gr TTSX bullets has 3 elk down so far this season, one shot each and done. Might have to load some 80gr TTSX bullets in the .240 and loan it out for late season elk just 4 the hell of it. I doubt the results will be any different.

Congrats on that moose! I think that TTSX are a different breed, but they have to be wound up with enough initial velocity to really work as intended.

Those who have followed Gunnutz for some time are aware that I am a Nosler Partition fan, having used them successfully for over 40 years.

Nevertheless, I have taken a few game animals with the TTSX, and can find no fault with those I have shot at game. I have yet to recover one.

I do have a couple given to me that showed very little/no expansion. As already stated, all bullet designs will occasionally "fail"

I have shot the 130 TTSX in one of my 308 Norma Mags, and at close to 3500 fps, it is scary accurate. I would not hesitate to poke a Moose or Elk with this load.

I also have a 270 Winchester, 110 TTSX load that shoots very well, indeed. Again, should I be carrying it when a legal Moose appeared, I would take the shot, confident that it would do just fine.

There are several "good" monometal bullets out there now, and I suspect we will see yet more as time goes on. They are a good sign of progress.

Regards, Dave.

Barnes brought the mono metal to the masses. In my opinion the "problems" were largely overstated, as is often the case when you're the new kid on the block.

I have used Barnes since the original X. Always worked fine and resulted in good penetration and dead animals. The changes to subsequent designs did more to prevent fouling and increase accuracy in my opinion.

JMHO - and it ain't based on hype, theory and sponsor bias.

Exactly. Excessive penetration is never a problem. I'd rather see someone use an FMJ than a match bullet like an AMax or Berger.
