"Like New" Yugo M48 Mausers?

Weimajack's M48's are still there (no updates on Sold rifles). Maybe he raised the prices as he didn't want to be bothered during the weekend?

Amen. I think I have an M48B as well but not sure. It doesn't have the symbol on top of the barrel but all else seems M48A, is that a M48B?

Two points I will make:

1) I like 8x57 more than most comparable caliber a when loaded to euro pressures, not the anemic US loads the lawyers imposed fearing people will shoot them in a gew88.

2) I don't know anyone who bought an m48 as a cost effective k98 lookalike, apart from Mitchell's Mauser customers. I bought mine as it is a cost effective way to get an as-new matching 8mm military Mauser with a prefect bore, large ring 98 action, that is rugged and fun to shoot with irons. I often carry mine around the property and shoot pests with it because it's fun and eccentric to use this gun over a .22lr or whatever. And I can shoot milsurps matches with it. It's built like a tank as well.

If I wanted a matching nazi k98, that is what I would buy. And then it would sit there looking pretty as its too valuable to shoot much.

Concur. I have the die set, trimmers, and Hornady components to make a decent batch of 7.92x57 reloads. I like to taylor the reloads until it matches the rifle as perfect as I can get it to tack at 100 yards. Used to be in Victoria with their great 250 yd range but moved out to NS and a smaller club. There are longer ranges here but the fees and the people are decent.

I made a display for my queens but shooting 8mm is a joy. M48s are decently accurate right out of the cosmo but giving them guys it's their $5000 rifles a run for their money is my kind of fun. Factory S&B ammo isn't too bad here either but agree with you, get out to the range and shoot them.

Very nice rifle you got there. The bluing looks new! Thanks for posting up the pics, I'm still procrastinating on the clean-up. Seeing your pics is giving me the motivation again!

Thank you. I've been polishing with a cloth since I got it. Plenty of time in the sun to loosen it up. That dogs breakfast of numbers under the barrel has me baffled. I will have to take a rubbing of it to get a better picture. I will shoot it that's for sure.

FWIW, I'm impatient and hate waiting for a garbage bag and the sun to do the work. I usually speed that up with a paint stripping gun. I just wave it back and forth over the stock, making sure not to dwell too long in any spot (it could char the wood if you do). It gets the stocks REALLY warm in a real hurry. I just keep wiping with paper towel until nothing else comes out, then i'm done. Takes maybe 30 minutes per stock set, and that's going slow and being careful.

I'm almost ashamed to admit I used an old 3in50 shell filled with oily water and sat it on top of my wood stove for the metal parts. It got the majority of the cosmo out and the bag did the rest. I got up at 6am, lol, well the kids got me up, I just ran off to do this. Still, fun doing the unveiling.

I LOVE it!

Very impressed. It has a little newspaper stuck to the cosmo and it's greasy as hell - but it's mint. Bolt/receiver/magazine/stock all have matching #'s, stock is really nice and dark, rifle looks gorgeous. Not the best pics, but I'm really happy with my purchase. This was a "Do you trust me Weimajack handpick" and I must say, it's awesome. Just got it and didn't clean out the bore yet, but I'm sure it's just as minty as the rest. Sling looks near new and the ammo pouches are in great shape. Unlike many other surplus M48's, the cleaning rod and sight hood are intact. The one I got from CT came with nothing.

Now I have a cleaning job to do

I love it. Bolt, bluing, bore is like new, all #'s match, even the barely visible penciled in # on the stock. A few marks on the stock and a chip on the end (chip had already started, end cap didn't want to come off so mostly my fault), but overall it's excellent. No sanding at all, just cleaned cosmo and linseed oiled.

Glad I got it, I think these will be difficult to find in the future (#'s matching, excellent condition milled M48's). All I have to do now is take it to the range!

Stock is dark, similar to a walnut colour. Very happy with the rifle, sights are definitely easier to see than my VZ24.

As a bit of advice, there is no compelling reason to remove the buttplate on these rifles for cleaning or degreasing. If you do, you run the risk of chipping the toe, like the last poster did.

Personally, I leave the buttplate be, along with the bayonet lug and recoil bolt.

I took the last one off of my shooter grade one without issue, this one seemed welded on (probably had never been off of the rifle). Didn't think of it at the time, but not going to worry about it now. I'll just keep oiling it and it'll get darker like the rest of the stock.

Finally got out to the range with my new M48 from Weimajack. Shoots lazors. A bit high but that could have been me, but centred horizontally. Slick bolt action. Used reloads, S&B cases, Sierra SPT 150gn, IMR 4064, 45.3 gn, federal 210 primers. I used the same OAL I was using for my RC as that was my primary purpose today.

So, I'm happy.

It's probably shooting high because you have the sight set to 200m.
I checked that right off the start. I'm used to the K98 rear sight which seems to give a clearer view. Might be some bad habits in there.

I'm going to take a look at the handguard and see if I set it correctly. I only fired 4 rounds at 50 yards and they were all touching each other. Mind you this was benched, sand bagged etc. Can't afford a lead sled at the moment lol.

I will take a serious look at the OAL and get off some factory rounds and see where it sits. Think I love these more than the RC, hate to know what I'm missing in VZ24s Claven.

Oh, totally didn't realize that. That makes sense - or at least with my little experience it does. On one hand makes sense that most battlefield situations, barring close combat, 200m would be my expected range. On the other, wouldn't it makes sense to have a lower setting? Is that also the case in a K98?

I've seen some good posts from you Claven on the M48. Is there an equivalent book on the M48s in the same bain as Richard Laws book?

Tradex listed a few more....I like the looks of this stock, but then I remembered how much I don't like shooting Mausers ...

Here is mine. There were 6 ordered from Tradex for my buddy's shop, and this one was the one I thought was nicest. I had hoped there would be a walnut stocked M48B, but there was only one and it was a beat up refurb with a re-numbred walnut stock and obviously renumbered bolt and floor plate. Interestingly, that one was still in the cellophane bag that some dealers are charging a premium for. I passed on it and settled on this nice elm-stocked M48.

PS: If I was buying again, I'd get one from Weimarjack. He's at least taking photos, hand selecting and grading this guns. Not even Jean at P&S is doing that this time. And to be frank, half the rifles I picked through were pretty rough, so it's worth getting a hand pick IMHO.

I did shoot it today also. I had thought I got most of the cosmo out, but after 10 rounds in the hot sun, it started leaching out of the handguard again. I suspect it will do this for some time to come. Oh well.

The bore is about perfect and the rifle grouped reasonably well at 100m using old Turk 154gn surplus rounds. With these hot rounds, the gun was shooting about 6 to 8" high, which I expected as the battle sight is 200m. I'll try some 198gn ullets next and see what it does.

How is the trigger on yours, mine M48 has a very stiff trigger.

Actually, mine is pretty good. If yours is rough, a trip to the gunsmith for a stoning and polish of the sear and cocking piece might help. Also, if you have not take the trigger off the rifle when cleaning it, the trigger spring could be filled with dried cosmolene goop, which will make the trigger much harder to pull. Mine was goo-ed up and improved nicely once cleaned out.
