I took a couple of 91/30's to the range yesterday and fired 40 rounds of PRVI 182gr through each. Normally this would have resulted in me having a sore shoulder for a couple days
I tried the hard rubber pad and found it better partially because it gave me more length of pull. I decided to try a Limbsaver slip-on pad just for comparison.
I could have fired 400 rounds easily. I took it off and fired a few with out it but I put it back on and found it easier to concentrate on the shooting and not the recoil. I'm 6'1" and weigh 220 lbs. so you would think that the Mosin recoil shouldn't bother me. I guess I'm a big baby, but I'm sure loving my Mosin's now.
Feel free to post pics of wives and and girlfriends shooting them wearing nothing but skimpy t-shirts. I won't mind.

What size or part number was that Limbsaver? I need to get a replacement slip on pad. My old slip on recoil pad has disintegrated with time - it saw lots of use on my M44. Definitely makes shooting the MN gentler, and I too like the longer length of pull.

I use the same recoil pad for shooting most of my milsurps at the range, primarily to add some LOP to what are generally very short rifles. The added recoil reduction is a major bonus. Yes, the price is high, but mine has survived regular use for several years without any noticeable wear or degradation of performance.

I would suggest to you that this rifle with that load does not require a recoil pad. There must be something up with the way you are holding and supporting this rifle. These are not .22 rifles. They need to be held with authority - especially on the bench.

I have a factory installed Limbsaver on my Remington 700 .30-06, and would never go without one again!

Not that .30-06 is really a punishing round, but it makes shooting it more enjoyable.

Don't know if your comment is directed at the OP or me but I want one more as a way to increase LOP rather than recoil reduction. If it is directed at the OP, he stated that he is a bit recoil sensitive, and there's nothing wrong with that. Everybody is different. He also stated he liked the increase in LOP as well.

Original Post - More of a suggestion than a comment. I don't mean to insult but in my experience, from years of coaching, most shooters become recoil sensitive because of the manner in which they are holding the rifle. Most of the time the hold is far too soft (or light) and the shoulder takes a pounding.

When I was a young lad I did on several occasions put 300-400rds down my
M44 in one day. The rifle was as issued. A butt pad would have been nice. With a recoil buttpad I like the extened stock length and it is also more pleasureable to shoot.

Mind you, if I had a choice between $100/1000rds 7.62x54r (ahh...the good ole days in the late 80's when Century Arms Montrea was around!) or a buttpad, I'd take the cheap ammo.:)

No insult taken. Part of my problem was with the original LOP. I was too close to the rear sight. I have to wear reading glasses and the closer I am to the rear sight, the blurrier it is. So yeah I probably was backing off it a bit to get a better sight picture. I've been a member of a few regimental rifle teams and have had proper coaching so I'm not a total tool. It is quite impressive how much recoil the pad actually absorbs.

All of my hunting rifles wear pads 303 and 7mm mag (2 303 1 7mm mag). My moose mosin wears a slip on. If that makes me a p@ssy then bring on the vagisil.
