Limiting Amount of Ammo Purchase

I am just curious if there is any consensus on CGN about retailers limiting larger ammo purchases of the same caliber/type due to current shortages. Up until recently we have not had any issues for the availability of most calibers and type, however as new shipments are being delayed we are trying to be fair by restricting individuals on most larger bulk purchases. We are still selling case lots (when available) just not multiple cases. Is this in keeping with other stores? Phil.

Only places that I know of is Sail and Cabelas/Bass Pro

I generally don't like the idea because it's not worth the drive to pickup a couple boxes.

No, and whenever I have bought anything lately they've always encouraged me to buy more.

Couple retailers I used to buy from limiting to two boxes..well paying the dangerous goods shipping for two boxes is a fools errand… so that means the other items they have that I want also get purchased elsewhere.

Previously we had no limitation on size of ammo or components purchases however recently we had some misunderstandings with a few customers so we are trying to be fair. I personally am against limiting any volume purchases but I feel this is an unusual situation.
Centerfire-5 boxes per caliber
Rimfire 17hmr/22 mag- 1 brick
22 lr- 5 bricks
Handgun bulk -2000 rounds
Individual boxes -10 boxes per caliber
Shotgun ammo-2 cases
Powder -1 lb x2 (per part #)
Primers -1 brick (1000) per size
These limitations are per visit. So far most customers have been very understanding and in some cases they were from out of town and were able to get enough to solve their shortage. Remember that have had had good supplies in the past but that is changing fast. Phil.

You are in business to make money. Sell it all as fast as you can. Why sit on profit? Half the retailers here are listing incoming shipments of components to presell. Don’t waste your time counting boxes.

I wonder what the misunderstanding was, did the customers feel entitled and expressed to you that you should limit ammo sales?

He who ponies up the cash should get the goods he wants. If someone is late to the party too bad. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, that's life. Sorry, not sorry.

More reasonable than many other stores as it spreads the joy around as much as possible. I can understand some folks having problems with paying to ship small amounts when they’re far from a gun shop but of late I have paid to have one case of 20 gauge, the limit at most stores, shipped within province and been happy at being able to buy it as is sells very fast when finally in stock. Blink and ammo is gone at many stores including the big boys.

The $80 303 British and the 22 WMR are languishing on the shelves from what I see, I certainly wouldn't be limiting people on 22 WMR.

It's definitely a difficult question. In theory I think setting reasonable limits during extreme shortages, especially in regards to reloading components, can be an alright idea. The problem is for people like me who have no local availability, having to drive to different cities or pay shipping for a single 1lb container of powder gets unreasonably expensive. But I guess that's just the situation we're in now.

I refuse to shop anywhere that limits purchases, you are in business to sell and as a consumer I should be able to buy what I want period. As a business why limit or refuse to sell to a paying customer in hopes someone else may buy it?

I don't think we can limit our way out of the situation, at some point people will not be bulking up at inflated prices.

if there was a limit per visit, that would be fine if Nadia was ringing me in at the till, but being that she's not there anymore, it's hardly worth the drive let alone the shipping. We shoot so much now with the new contracts it's actually made more sense to let the retailers bid on filling our orders, and until the price of fuel went up it was wiser for us to send our own truck back as far as saskatchewan to pick up our supplies

I get why you had to put a limit Phil but honestly those are pretty low limits. I came into the store maybe 2 weeks before you started limiting and bought 1000 rounds of 22 and 100 rounds of 12g slugs. Personally its not often that I manage to get out shopping and to not even get half of what I needed would have left a bad taste in my mouth.

Just my two cents, I like your store and will still shop there.

We have been to recent gun shows where other "dealers" wanted to buy all of our 9mm , .223 or rimfire we brought to the show with the intent on raising the prices by 20-30 % (or more) to sell to the public when they came through the door. Now some of our inventory has been squirrelled away for a while and since we left the "old original prices" on them there was a rush to purchase all. It is indeed a rare occassion when we limit purchases so I don't see us loosing much business however one thought was just to raise the price by 20-30 % on our own to be on the same level as others however this felt very unfair. I wonder how some here would feel about us just raising the price to limit larger purchases ? To me that would be a douche bag way of handling the problem. As I said before we are trying to figure this out and even then our owners group does not all feel the same. We were just chastised by a customer as we were selling a gun when ammo for it was not available in our store...he felt we should not sell guns in calibers where we are sold out of ammo. You can't please everyone. Phil.

Just using your previous purchases...you would still be able to buy most of this volume now under our new limits. Phil.

Also I previously had a couple of US retailers try to buy all my hard to find ammo at retail prices...I previously made an April Fools joke about this however the offer was true however I was not comfortable in selling all my ammo to one guy as I felt to remain an active retailer I would still need product to sell. Phil.
