Hi guys I put a heavy coat of blo on a stock and let it dry .it's not tacky anymore but it's very shiny.whats the best way to remove this without damaging underlying cartouches

You don't want to remove it all. You just want to rough it up a bit. 000 steel wool will do that for you. So will 000000 steel wool but it takes longer. I have a friend that loves to use brown paper bags to get the gloss finish down.

Methyl Hydrate doused on 0000 steel wool will take linseed and other oil finishes off wood without damaging it.

I like this approach. Especially if it hasn't cured fully.

If you just want to dull the finish you could skip the alcohol I figure.

Personally I like a few thin coats of gel varnish. Let it cure (a week at least). Then fine steel wool to get the bumps off and sheen down. Usually a couple of coats of wax after that.
