Lion Rifle Tests: Sauer 202 Forest Takedown 9.3x62 20" Carbine Review

Very well written, thank you for that.

I found both the first round flier and the checkering issues quite outrageous though. Especially for a rifle that costs as much.

Out of curiosity, what are spare barrels worth?

Excellent review. You gave me reasons to want one, and reasons to look for something else, and that is the heart of a fine review.

I'm in love with takedown guns, but it seems they are all either prohibitively expensive or have their own problems. It's a labour of love.

Spare barrels in Canada are about $1,500 I'm afraid, US catalog price $1,300 for the Forest's contour. Thanks Steve, I appreciate that, glad I was able to have it come across as I'd hoped. There was plenty I liked about it, in the end, just not my cup of tea when all considered together. It had a lot of refined features that set it apart, and then a lot of the stuff that dogs many rifles.

Good review. I was a bit surprised at the steep price. There seem to be plenty of high quality options in that price range. How much does a Hartman & Wiess take down cost these days?

Not sure on the H&W 1899, and no I have not benn, I was offered a Chapuis recently but a double, not a takedown bolt. When I get to the Merkel 140AE review I'll go into why, for myself at least, the double works better as a takedown headed for Africa than this one example in the Sauer. I will continue to seek out takedowns, and I'm building a custom one right now, as I believe it's the only way to travel now for me.

Lol...ok, I did a search for H&W take-downs and found a nice one. It makes the Sauer look...exceptionally inexpensive.

This one is a 2 barrel set - .375 H&H and .458 WM - and is a bit "fancy". It can be yours for a mere $120,000.

That would be slightly over my price range, how much would that be without wooden case and sling?

Ardent - don't laugh at me here, but what about a BLR T/D in .450 Marlin or .325 WSM? In the latter chambering you could load up some 250gr Woodleighs to ~2400fps and call it a modern take on the .318 W-R or .333 Jeffery. it would make a neat story too - Lever Action Lion!

By the way, Ardent, would you now say that Mauser M03 has better receiver than Sauer 202? Don't you think that 202 top closed receiver contributes quite a bit of hustle during double feed or you feel that all push feeds would be essentially the same?

Still feel they are essentially the same, in that being able to clear a jam more easily doesn't render a push feed a better system in the end. When I buy Mausers, they better be M98s, the other trouble I have with the M03 is the barrel screws system, instead of a tool-less mechanism, and the lack of a true takedown model (to my knowledge). I do believe they may have the best modern safety on a bolt action however though.

Don't hunt lion. The Internet will be mean to you if you do

So I've heard lately!

Have you ever handled or shot a chapius challenger takedown? Just wondering how it would compare
our best friend in France and with whom we hunted a lot in Alsace had two and he didnt keep them ,,, they re not and by far close to any Isny productions he has now taken the plunge of Blaser R8 ...
