Lioness Hunt 2017

I just don't get it. I know this is a gun forum but to kill for the fun of it just makes me ill.

Understandable, I'm more of a supporter of hunters who hunt for meat. Likely not too much support for this view on a gun forum as you say.

What I don’t get is how people post their opinions without doing a bit of research. If you are going to go to the trouble of posting something, why not take a bit of time to inform yourself before commenting? Whether or not this kind of hunting is your thing, suggesting that the op kills for the fun of it shows considerable ignorance.

I guess both of you have huge issues with predator hunting, hunting ground hogs, ground squirrels, lots of reasons to hunt outside of just for food, he was not hunting just for the fun of it if you read the actual thread, this was a management hunt.

So you guys are having an emotional reaction to the story without taking the time to learn what the realities of game management are in RSA, or in Africa in general. Why would you hunt at all if it wasn't fun? You can buy meat at Safeway. Hunting is fun, and the kill makes the hunt relevant. There are animals I won't hunt, but I support those who do, and don't look down my nose at them. When I was in Tanzania I wouldn't shoot a zebra, and here neither I would choose to hunt wild horses, even though I understand the necessity of both. But that's not what you're saying is it.

It's my life dream to take a kudu and a zebra with my bow,I love reading posts from people that have been there.

Bowhunting plains game through spot and stalk takes on a whole new level of hunting ... you just have to be prepared to hunt a little longer and harder. I much prefer it to sitting in a blind, however we do a fair bit of that as well. Kudu is one of my absolute favourites to hunt, but zebra is really difficult to get close to as they are seldom alone and that can make for a lot of eyes to defeat on a stalk:)

is there a reason to target females over males? (maybe i missed something earlier on?)

We actually target both to answer your question. Males mostly when they are outside of the pride and females to keep the numbers down. The females are also less expensive to hunt and you get the same experience as if hunting the more expensive male lions.

Awesome story with incredible pictures, thanks. And congrats on the kill, that must have had your heart racing! That would be an awesome mount in the family rec room! My old dogs would likely have a heart attack!

What kind of bullet and how did it perform?

I was using a CZ 550 in .375 H&H with a 200gr GS Custom Bullet. It is a monometal bullet manufactured in RSA and the US. Punched right through and did the job with the lion dropping on the spot (however I shot a bit high and had to finish her with a second shot), unfortunately lions being fairly thin skinned it was a complete pass through and no bullet recovery. I used the same bullet on a Cape Buff the year before and I heart shot the buff and it didn't go more than ten yards.

Do you how much energy those rounds deliver compared to a standard lead/copper round?

hey major were in the living room are you going to put her i cant wait to see her do you think you will have any bs bringing her back lbo

I'll post up a pic went I get her home, hopefully in September, but most likely across from the Cape Buff mount. Since the Cecil debacle a lot of the airlines stopped carrying the big five so that will be the first hurdle to overcome, however most of the airlines that stopped carrying trophies home to Canada and the US weren't the ones I used traditionally anyways ....
