I actually picked myself up a Benelli MR1. Takes standard AR mags, looks the part and is non restricted. Alot cheaper then the XCR and the SL8
it also happens to make me physically excited
Half the price but near as many parts to play with at the moment. There are so many different mods and parts for the XCR and SL8, guys can customize to their tastes.
I like the SL-8, but you gotta be able to stand the sight of watching a big, gaping hole burn through your wallet as you try to modify it.
The same problem happens to guys with AR's, but at least their starting price is lower.

Which, at today's exchange rate, brings my total to just shy of $6000, plus various taxes and shipping. You should be able to get some of these parts used (which I did, this is a few hundred more than I spent), but also bear in mind, you'll have a difficult time finding many of these parts in Canada (particularly the G36 parts - forearm, stock, conversion block, lower).
That said, it's truly a thing of beauty to me, and I love it, but yeah, be prepared to be poor, do a lot of work, do a lot of looking around for parts and trying to deal with import/export BS from the States, and general hard work.
If you want something out of the box without all the work, if you have the money, go with the Swiss Arms PE90, and if you don't have that much, go with a used AR180B, SL8 (and don't have plans on converting it), or an XCR.
I think I'm going to go and cry myself to sleep now.

Ask those in Australia and England if they'd wished they'd been more aware of the spurious tactics of the anti-firearm lobbyist agenda now that their privilages have been essentially eroded? I love romancing my xcr. Probably one of the most intelligent stupid purchases ive ever made. If I recall correctly ive now had one fail to feed caused by the mag not being locked in, one double feed and one weird situation where the spent casing was turned around backwards in the action above a partially chambered round, this thing hucks the empties out with some serious velocity every time so I dont think it was a fte, Im convinced it bounced off the wall and right back into the port.... the odds of that are quite unlikely but I just dont see any other explanation. Im getting about 2moa or just slightly bigger with the irons, and id say its definatly worthy of some optics to see what its really capable of. Non restricted, fairly accurate, reliable, 10 round mags....whats not to love.

A ruger mini 14 is a good choice if you want to build your own "black rifle". The newer models have good accuracy, which I can personally vouch for, and you have a whole variety of stocks to chose from.
