List your favourite underrated cartridges

308, gets hacked on by many, but it's solid cartridge that covers a lot of food groups
348 Winchester, another good one

35 Rem with the new Lever Evolution pills... Excellent performance on deer.

And the 35 Whelen (30-06 case necked up to 9mm). Bang flop on both bears that were harvested with it.

It would be interesting to see more of this.

Pick your underrated cartridge and explain why it’s underrated and/or what other cartridge steals it’s thunder.

Personal justification is, as the Mastercard commercial says; "Priceless!" I will be damned if I am going to put out my "barely supportable" list on CGN to have it chipped away at until it crumbles, leaving nothing on which to prop my addiction... it is a fragile thing, a house of cards... a wisp of smoke.

I saw brief mention of the 260 Rem. That cartridge for sure is a case of poor marketing by Remington. A great little cartridge for those that know it. The crazy part is getting to see how it could have been for the 260 had it been marketed well because we have the 6.5 Creedmoor, an identical cartridge, enjoying amazing popularity.

How... in the heck... is the 30-06 an underrated cartridge!? It has to be the most popular cartridge of all time. Even people that know absolutely nothing about guns have heard of it.

Underrated *rolls eyes*

I don't know. While I think the BLR 358 is a great package, I think I'd have a hard time using it one handed off a bike or 4 wheeler. Unless you meant stopping power, where I think I'd like something beginning in ".40", as quads are pretty tough!

Most quads can be stopped with a good stick , aircraft are a bit tougher

6.5x55 is a great little cartridge, somewhat forgotten these days. 25-06 also seems to have less play lately. Both great rounds for their intended purposes.

356 win is a great capable round that gets eyebrows raised when i come to deer and moose camps all the time. Its like Rodney Dangerfield it get no respect. most times no one knows what it is but when i wolloped a bear end over end last fall in front of two of the regulars at deer camp there jaws just dropped. All 35s are always under rated as 50-75 yard bush guns.Another gun thats under rated would be a slug gun as a short range gun. loaded with sabots going 2000 ft per sec in rem premier load shoots through trees and can nock a deer at 200 .in heavy timber in ontario we usually are lucky to get a shot over 100 .

7.65 x 53
Midway between the .308 and the 30-06. Not the 1st smokeless rifle round, but it might be argued the 1st successful one.
A little more oomph and flatter than a 308...good enough for the deer around my house.
Short arse neck on it though.

My pick for an underrated cartridge is the 284 winchester, basically 280 rem performance in a short action. Its too bad Winchester didn't chamber it in a bolt action rifle from the get go, instead they brought to market in the M88 lever rifle, so it never really caught on. Light weight rifle builders realized the benefit of the 284win, Nula chambered it and it was the most popular cartridge for them. Precision shooters also noticed the potential of the cartridge and many rifles were chambered for it and its little brother the 6.5-284. Anyway I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it.

.22lr, .303 British, 7x57 all just great old cartridges that were great over a hundred years ago and still work just as well today. Maybe I should add the 9.3x74r, I’ve never used one but I bought one today so that’s about to change.
