List your favourite underrated cartridges

The 270 win is a better all around cartridge imo, but nothing wrong with a 25-06 either.[/QUOTE]

Agree, have had a few rifles in 270 but thinking I might try a 25-06.

I’ll throw my personal choices in, 358 Norma, 35 Whelen, 6.5x55, and the 25-06. As mentioned by our other members here, these cartridges are very underrated.

25-06 still underated. I don't currently one one nor have I shot one but from all the reading I have done, it appears to be very effective. I am considering a deer only rifle in 25-06 for it's flat shooting, low recoil and hard hitting qualities.. Not much mention of it in this thread. What say you fellas that have experience with it?

Very under rated cartridge. Awesome deer cartridge, also effective on larger ( and smaller) game .

I'd say the 25-06 is one of the most over rated cartridges out there. Recoils a lot for it's light punch downrange. Very inefficient cartridge due to the poor bullets on the market. Hampered by twist rate restrictions built around bullet design from the 1940s. 257 Roberts beats it in class all day long

I agree.

Before this thread ends I will venture just about every cartridge made will be voted one way or the other...

9.3x62, 9.3x66, 35-300WSM/350WSM/35 Sambar or whatever else you might call it, 358 win, 358 Norma, the RCM’s, 257 bob, 6.5x55, and 22 Hornet are all interesting.

Agree, the 243 is a great caliber in my opinion. Also 6.5x55 is another great cartridge that should be given the dues it deserves.

I reloaded and used the 280 for many many years but also I beat the crap out of my shoulder with the 10 and 12ga to the point I had to reduce recoil or stop shooting so went to the 243 for a rifle
I was told it was a little squirrel gun and would not take deer
Well some hand loads of nosler partitions sure does bang flops on them and now I love the caliper
Cheers

Yes,,, the good old 25/06 gets over looked alot...

It was destin to disappear 40 ish years ago since it wasn't a big seller over the years,,, lucky thing was that the flat plains hunters kept it going for antelope and Mule Deer hunting...

Something clicked with folks since the 257 Weatherby was holding its own,,, another trump card that showed up was the gals that were taking on the hunting sports...

The little 1/4" bore was a good match for the gals and younger kids,,, the 25/06 can shoot flat like the 22-250 with the right bullets...

Felt recoil similar to a 243,,, and a fraction less Punch-Junk then a 270 Winchester...

Lately the increased demand has slowly been ramping up for it... The 25 is officially 100 years old this year... 1919 when it entered the stage... Ha

A few bullet manufacturer's are starting to produce so better bullets for it,,, a few more bounded Rock-Chucker in the mix along with the 131 gr Black-Jack...

A few hunters have had good success hunting Elk and Moose with it,,, it might not be considered the long range beast for the thick-skins,,, at a reasonable distance the 25/06 can easily get past the Wrapper and make one heck of a mess in the draw works...

There's a few pictures on line that show the grind that occued to a few critters that were harvested with the 1/4"...

Yuppers,,, the little 25/06 took the back seat to the 30/06 and 270 along with lots of other cartridges that kept it at bay...

The new bullets and quality rifle powders might put more life into the hidden gem...

Only time will tell...

Cheers from the North

Pretty much any of the 257-264-284 calibers with the exception of the adequately rated 6.5 Creedmoor.

Most over rated would be .223, any .30 cal and the .410 bore.

Under.....over rated. Ahead of its time; however, the gun industry abandoned it. Had one, looking here, it took 9 months to find dies, brass, projectile. Just no factory ammo, no brass, no support from the industry. It would be easier to reload for European calibers like 8x68 or 7x57r.

I have owned a few .350 Rem Mag rifles... still have two. I never had any trouble sourcing brass or dies and there are lots of .35 cal bullet options. Also, factory ammo is being made. The .350 RM is an excellent cartridge, it is efficient and effective.
