I was just given an old sporterized Lithgow dated 1942. The butt socket is stamped:

MA
LITHGOW
SMLE
II*
1942

Was there ever a Mk II* ?

The stamping isn't really sharp, but that's certainly what it appears to be.
thr rifle seems to be in quite good shape except for a rough and somewhat rusty bore. Barrel number doesn't match with the action & bolt.
(Sorry, can't do photos.)

Quite common to see a 1942 lithgow with what appears to be a II* stamp, it appears the III stamp was damaged & a few where stamped so.

The SMLE Convt'd MkII was a conversion of the Lee Metford MkII and II* and Long Lee MkI and I* to conform to the SMLE MkI. They were all converted before WWI.
The arm in the op has a poorly struck III stamp.
