LMT's 308 MWS

How many rifles did you get?
Are these same as the pic on the website? or do they have the blk barrels?

The "Black Barrel" as you refer to it is the model #LM308MWSF and we don't have a shipping schedule on those yet from LMT nor do we have any pre-orders for them as they weren't even offered until quite recently .

That gun is a different model (#LM308MWSF as opposed to #LM308MWSE) and is based on the version that the UK military purchased from LMT, but the commercial version LMT is selling is in black (not FDE/Tan as shown at SHOT).

Basically the difference is the barrel... the UK gun has a Stainless Steel tactically flat matte blackened barrel with a 1:11.25 twist instead of the CMV Chrome Lined barrel in 1:10 twist that the standard US model comes with.

Note that the "SST Black Barrel" model sells for over $500.00 US more than the standard model. We don't have Canadian pricing worked out yet for that model.

All the guns arriving over the next few months will be the standard LM308MWSE model as we have been advertising.

Thanks, I understand the difference. I just wanted to know, "cosmetic wise" if the barrel is black or the "shiny" stainless finish? The rifles I've seen showing up at US dealers have the black barrel.

They both have black barrels. I wasn't aware that any of the F version (SST) barrels had shipped to dealers except possibly in the last few days.

LMT is still rolling out orders of the E model (CMV Chrome Lined barrels) and those orders were placed at the SHOT Show... LMT wasn't even taking orders for the SST barrel version at that time and were "deciding" at what point they would release that version.

We don't expect to see any until summer or even later.

Mark, I'm unclear on what you're saying here. Are you saying that the delivery date for the original pre-ordered items has been pushed back to summer, or later? Or are you saying that the SST barrel will be available in summer, or later. I'm also wondering if we have stock options. I originally planned on installing a Magpul PRS stock, then the Sopmod sort of grew on me. That was partly due to the fact that that's how the Brits took it, and partly due to it's functionality. I'm not familiar with how a "compliant" Sopmod is neutered. Is it that the buffer tube has no index points, or is the Sopmod stock itself dysfunctional. If it`s just the buffer tube, then great, but if it`s the stock itself, that seems like an expensive piece of dysfunctional plastic. I`m thinking a PRS, or a UBR, or even an A2 might be a better option......or no stock at all perhaps. Just wondering.

What I said was that the model with the SST barrel probably won't be available until summer or later and we haven't even priced it or put it on our website yet. The standard 308MWSE model we've taken orders for are on schedule. We expect units to start arriving here in June but due to the new US State Department restrictions, the permit they approved requires those units be exported with fixed stocks and muzzle devices.

The "compliant" SOPMOD stocks use a special extension tube with no position adjustment... fixed length. What you do with it after you buy it is totally up to you :)

OK, I just noticed that you`ve got this back on the website, and the stock is clearly visible. My question about the stock has been answered. A new question..........is the `Fixed` muzzle device a welded on A2 flashhider, or the threaded on PWS brake that you had previously mentioned.

I was typing this out while you were answering my last post. Thanks. Stiil wondering about the muzzle device.

No idea at this point

I can see the confusion here, as this is the original gun advertised:

and this is the one being shipped?

Will the fixed stock be black? Has the gas block been moved back?

Thanks!

The original picture was the only picture that LMT had released so we used that. The picture you see now is of the actual gun that we now have in-house.

The stock is black (photo just doesn't show that clearly).

As for the gas block I don't know if it moved since we never saw the gun that LMT originally pictured and don't know exactly what it was. May have been a longer barrel unit they were (or are) working on... I suspect that the picture LMT put out originally was of the 18" or 20" stainless barrel they were talking about offering... I just don't know.

The gas system does appear to have been shortened. Here's the original picture released by LMT.

Pictures of the civilian version that I've seen elsewhere, as well as this picture of the British military version clearly show a shorter gas system. It changes the aesthetics, but likely nothing else.

Let me say it again... the original picture that LMT published (and that they are still using on their website) was an advance promotional picture and was NOT intended to be indicative of the specific models... it was in fact a picture of an 18" Stainless barrel that they still intend to offer but which won't actually be available until later 2010 or more likely early 2011. We expect them to offer that as a barrel option and not as a complete firearm.

That 18" Stainless Barrel (used in the picture) does utilize a "rifle length" gas system so the gas block does sit further forward than the 16" barrels which use (if I'm not mistaken) a mid-length gas system.

Remember that the LMT 308 uses their MRP upper which has a quick change barrel capability... so changing out barrels, barrels lengths (and eventually calibers) is a very easy task. The gas system length is a function of the barrel that you are inserting. On LMT's .223/5.56 MRP guns the 10.5" barrel is a CAR length gas system... the 16" is mid-length... switch between barrels takes about 2 minutes.

Now that we actually have one of the guns we were able to take actual pictures and those are being put on our website (1 is up there now)... this should eliminate any confusion... hopefully.

I never meant to be a PIA over the barrel? I saw the pic on the website and with no background info I believed that was what you were selling.Having seen the models with the black barrel show up in the US my natural curiosity compelled me to ask the question. Anyway were all on the same page now, and time to start budgeting for a LMT in 308 :)

Black barrel looks good, gas block further back is good, would help the balance. Shorter barrel is good. :)

Thanks for all the updates, Mark!
