lo recoil hunting rifle

What sort of game and what sort of range(numbers needed"a good distance" isn't enough), are you looking for a model of rifle or a cartridge?

As far as cartridges

.22lr(birds, gophers, rabbits)
.223(coyotes, foxes, badgers)
25-06(deer antelope, moose or elk under good conditions)
7mm-08(deer antelope, moose or elk under good conditions)
260rem(deer antelope, moose or elk under good conditions)
6.5x55(deer antelope, moose or elk under good conditions)
.243win(deer, antelope)
.270win(anything except big bears)

are all fairly low recoil hunting cartridges, depending on what you're going after.

As for rifles, go to the store and try holding some, find what fits you best in your price range, here's a few suggestions:

Marlin XL7/XS7
Stevens 200
Savage package rifles
Mossberg ATR/4x4(Ya I know, I'm gonna get flamed for writing that)
Weatherby Vanguard
Mauser m96(trade-ex, site sponsor above)
Tikka T3
Remington 700 sps

also look in the EE, ton's of deals to be found.

And don't forget, you're gonna wanna budget some money for a decent scope too, I'm partial to the bushnell 3200 elite, but you also wanna look at some of the lower end leupold's
 
I vote for a 308 Winchester. Recoil is easily as low as the 270win (almost seems a bit lower, to my subjective experience), but with the right load, it's very comfortably big enough to use for anything on this continent (yes, even big bears; just use a heavy, tough bullet, and keep the range inside 200 yards). Oh, and 308 Winchester ammo is available anywhere ammo is sold, and is usually the cheapest ammo going outside of 30-30.
 
LOW RECOIL. Staw away from "Light" or "Featherweight" rifles. No magnums either.

Are you interested in a mil surp or sporterized rifle at all? If so a 6.5x55 is an economical solution. No very cheap ammo available, but decent stuff isn't hard to find for standard price.

If you're looking for a new sporter, anything based on a mauser or 308 case will serve your needs, in anything other than an ultra-light rifle. How big a deal is looks? What kind of guns do you like the look of, even if out of your price range. People here will certainly be able to set you on the right path if you provide a little more information.

the 6.5x55 would be ideal. Its accurate, speed, and power to drop anything from deer to moose and elk. with a well placed shot. low recoil. I go out and shoot over 2 boxes and not even the smallest bruise.
 
Buy a gun your comfortable with, and caliber you like. Then spend $40 and put a limbs recoil saver pad on it. They work great you will not be disappointed.

Yeah another vote for 6.5x55. Getting a used one from Tradeex will give you some spare change for scoping it. Talk to Anthony about best choices in your price range after narrowing it down on their website.

A few yrs ago I re-barreled a 700 action into a 257Roberts. It fits ALL the requirements you list and has become my favourite rifle.

I highly recommend the cartridge for a deer rifle.

I shoot a tikka t3 lite in .308, i threw a limb saver on it aswell and recoil is not an issue at all.

If your worried about recoil get a Limb Saver recoil pad for your rifle.
 
I hunt with a Rem VTR in .308. Its a bit heavy but not too bad. The muzzle break makes for some noise but the recoil is very tame. I let a 12year old have a few shots with it and he commented on how little it recoiled and that he could shoot all day long with. I found a minty one on the EE for $650 and it was money well spent IMHO
