Hodgdon's Load Data Center seems to be down ATM so I am looking for load data for the 35grn V-Max bullets in both .223 and 22-250 using either of the 3 powders below as these are what I have on hand in adequate quantities:

Varget
Benchmark
BL-C(2)

Looking for min - max loads and approx Velocities as there is none in the manuals I have with the powders listed.

TIA
Richard

35 vmax out of a 22-250 or 223? Why? The BC's so miserable, any velocity advantage you might have would be exceeded by the much more aerodynamic 40's within the first hundred yards (probably within the first 50). The 35's are more suited to the Hornet, or other reduced-velocity applications.
In any event, Hodgdon does not list loads for the 35 vmax in the 223 or 22-250

Hmmmmmm....Thanks........I guess (bubble poppers) :D

I have 200 of the buggers that I want to use. I didn't realize how short they were until I got them home and opened them up :(

According to where they sit on my comparator, the 40grn are only .010 longer than the 35's.....but then again, I haven't checked the throat length on my XR-100 either.

/Me runs to check!!!!

I tried pushing them out of a varmint stalker in .223 a few years back using 748. They started flying apart at the highest speeds. Not sure if the rifling in that gun was on the aggressive side or if the jackets on the bullets were thin. I used the second half of the first box for some Blue Dot reduced loads, and I gave the second box away.

Would you happen to have that reduced load data? My .223 happens to be a 1:9 and would probably rip them apart now that I think about it. I wish I would have thought about it when I had them in my hand at the store :bangHead:

I did a measurement last night with my 22-250 and should be able to get the bullets at least 1/3 the way down the neck of the case and be around .020 off the lands.

I would guess that should be the max I would want to be off? Would .030 off the lands pose issues to get it further into the case?

Hodgdon's site is back up. No 35 grain data for either cartridge. Contact Hornady. There's no data on their site though.
Their 35 gr V-Max is listed as a .224" bullet and is made for the .22 Hornet. Rumour has it(another forum) that the bullet won't stay together at .22-250 velocities

Well, seeing as I have them now, I may as well try a few out and see what happens.

I will use the 40grn loads as a guideline and shoot them out to 100m to see if they hold together and will move out to 200 if I can.

Shot off a bunch of those in my AR and Varmint bolt guns in 223. Used same charge as listed for 40 gr. Worked OK. A lightish load but still grouped about 1.5 Moa out at 200 yards. The 40's are awesome, I'm trying to find more but everyone local has them on BO.

I have been playing with the same bullets in my .223. I have tried the classic Blue Dot 'reduced' load of 13gr with the 35gr v-max bullet. I was chronographing 3150fps with my 24" BDL (1:12"Twist). Winchester brass, Win SR primers, 2.120 OAL. The max load that I have found on the web is 14.5gr but I would proceed in small increments when passing the 13gr because of the nature of the powder.

I was very impressed with the load and I plan on churning out a bunch with this recipe. Very accurate, mild report, no recoil and no barrel heating even with fairly rapid firing. I would recommend at least trying that load if you have some Blue Dot around. I wouldn't bother using the 35gr v-max's for anything other than reduced loads for the reasons mentioned in the above posts.

Another nice thing about this load is that with a 200yd zero with my regular load (55gr Nosler BT, 27.3gr Varget) I am dead on at 100yds with the reduced load.

Well, It's off to WSS I go then :) Thanks for the load info.

Well I tested out the 35grn V-Max last night in my XR-100 22-250 and was quite surprised.
I worked up loads using 4ogrn bullet data in .5grn increments from 34gn of H4895 up to 37gn with a top velocity of 4039 FPS at 10yds from the muzzle (couldn't get the chrony working until the last 2 loads when we moved it out about 10yds into the sunny part :()
Best group was .589 at 100m with 36.5grns running around 3975 FPS but most of the loads were shooting under an inch (I will post pics when I get home)

All of them made it to the paper (none flew apart) :dancingbanana:

I even shot a few extras out to the 300m Pig and hit it 4/4 times :D
