I've acquired an old yet very clean, Remington 722 chambered in 222. Was wondering what would be a good all around varmint load for this gun. Not looking for any super long distance stuff, just a good and accurate all around coyote/fox/plinking load. Thanks.

Here's the load that worked in my triple duece. 24g of BLC2 powder behind a 50g speer TNT hollow point. I used CCI small rifle primers and WW cases. 24g is a starting load up to 26g max. This s/b about 3000 ft per sec. It was a really accurate load in a BSA heavey barrel. Load the bullets out as far as you can and still clear your mag. I chose BLC2 for its metering and with standing cold temperatures. The TNT bullet worked well on coyotes with little damage to pelts.

I think you will find the 222 easy to load for accuracy. They are one of the best accurate cartridges in my opinion-----Cowboy

Art, this one is a goodie as well... 20.5gr/IMR4198 pushing a 50gr. Sierra Blitz. Should you want a less frangible bullet then us a 50gr. Sierra spitzer instead. This was the old "standard" that many shooters used back in the 1950's when the 222 was a "new thing". I use RP brass as it was readily avalable up until a few years ago.

222

Have a Brno Fox .222 with Cheap 6X24 Tasco milldot mounted..

40 gr Sierra " Varminter"...23.7 gr Reloder 7...3 shots/100yds..0.52 inch
40 gr Sierra "" .. 22.6 gr Imr4198..... " " .. 0.60 inch

Hornady 45 gr. "hornet" ..21.5 gr Imr 4198...3 shots/100 yd..0.62 inch

Hornady 52 gr BTspz 20.5 gr Imr4198 ...3 shots/100yd.. 0.50 inch

Hornady 55 gr fbspz with cannelure..20.5 gr Imr4198..3 shots @ "200 yards"
0.870 inch.......

Rem 55 gr FMJ...19.5 gr Imr4198...3 shots/100 yd..0,65 inch
20.5 gr Imr4198...3 shots/100 yd..0.64 inch

Just about any bullet from 40 to 55 grains works well with Imr4198....

These loads are safe in my rifle and come from various reloading manual "max" loads..

hs45/70........your mileage may vary

Triple two

I shoot a standard contour barrel Reminton 700 BDL rifle with a 2 ounce match trigger (cause I had one). I use Norma brass, CCI BR4, Sierra 52 gr.HPBT Match bullets propelled by 21.0 grains of Reloader 7. Shoots nearly as well as some of the heavy barrel guns I shoot against.
100m = .388 average over 5 - five shot groups
200m = .711 average over 3 - five shot groups. Then the wind came up!
We will go no farther with that day!!!!
Carry on!

I've also used BLC2 powder with good results in my 222. The best accuracy with my rifle seems to be with Hornady 50 gr SXs and 50 gr Nosler BTs.

50g win sp (Cheapie's, $10/100) over 23.4g of h-335 and a fed sr primer.

This is damn near a max load so you know the drill - 10% and go from there.

This has been a really good load in the 3 rifles I tried it in.
